I prefer to write everything out longhand at first. That way, it isn't "real" yet. I can sketch, go off on tangents, and stay loose for as long as I need to.

I think for a lot of people, writer's block stems from self-criticism. So if you remember that the first few drafts are going to be crappy no matter what, then you can keep working regardless.

Everybody knows the usual stuff; work every day, set a routine, yada yada yada...

So, here's something I don't hear a lot of people talk about that helps me tremendously: Keep a secret journal for all of your really crap-tastic ideas. Work on bad ideas as often as you can, whenever you can. Work at moving your hands over a keyboard without really putting much thought into the content. Write down the stuff you wouldn't post, tweet, or otherwise show anybody else. Be random, be absurd. (less)
