I did not expect a parenting book to explain my own cat to me. Chapter one has a section on intermittent reinforcement that compares it to a slot machine, and there it was. Sometimes is the whole problem. Sometimes is what keeps the whining going.

That is not why I picked it up. One of my EO forum members has a four year old who has declared war on bedtime, and he asked me for my opinion. My own kid is 16 and a new driver, so I am a long way from arguing about socks, and I figured I would skim it and hand it back.

What I liked most is that she gives you a number. Chapter 5 says the protest gets louder before it gets quieter once you start holding a boundary you actually mean, and she calls that an extinction burst. Then she tells you to decide in advance how long you will hold the line, three to five minutes, and stick to that. Most books in this aisle never commit to anything you could time on a phone. She does. The HOLD business gets repeated more than I needed, although she warns you up front that the repeating is deliberate, so I will let her have it.

The thing that sold me on this book is small. About two thirds of the way in, the crew is aboard the container ship, the cutting machine is ready, and the hose will not connect. The ship is Japanese, so the fire hydrants take a different coupling than the American fitting they brought with them. The whole plan just stops. I sat up in bed. Nobody invents a problem that boring and that real unless they have actually stood on a deck.

The author is a merchant navy officer with about twenty years at sea and it shows on nearly every page. How a container gets sealed. How the load plan gets built. The little button under the desk on the bridge that sends a silent distress call and does not make a sound on the ship itself. That is the reason to read this.

The story is a heist. A shipping planner in an office notices a container that weighs far too much for what the paperwork claims, he tells his old captain about it over drinks, and it goes from there. The captain has a private reason for wanting the money and it is the most human part of the whole book.

Now the rough parts, and there are a few.

It needs a copy edit, and not a light one. Names change spelling, so Daniel becomes Daneil. Sentences lose their first letter. "Thier" shows up more than once. None of it ruins the story. All of it pulls you out of the story, and the writing underneath deserves better than that.

A woman named Sharon turns up on the boat past the halfway mark and I put my glasses back on and flipped backward twice looking for where she got introduced. She never does. She ends up being one of the better people in the book, which makes it stranger.

There is also a long stretch about a stolen crown in a kingdom the author made up, and for a good while I could not tell why I was reading it. It does connect. It just takes its time, and I nearly skipped ahead.

Back to the good, though. The detective in that section cracks his case by noticing that nobody keeps an old boxy television anymore. That is a lovely bit of thinking, and I did not see it coming.

Fair warning. It ends on "to be continued." I did not love that.

Anyway. Rough in spots, but the man knows ships. I would read the next one. ...more
