Book Daily, Goodreads

Although I joined Goodreads in July of 2010, I’m just starting to learn my way around this website.

Originally, if I remember correctly, you could post chapters of your work on the site for others to read and give feedback. I posted a few, got some look and sees, and then nothing. I figured the site was relatively dead and never came back to it until recently.

First impression when I signed on to delete my sample chapters: In the last three years, “my, but how the site has grown…”

It seems a writer’s dream, hundreds upon hundreds of readers and writers are connecting with each other. (seems like this should be the Oprah Winfrey website where she connects Authors with readers)

Okay, I’m going to get sidetrack here…

But as long as I’m on the subject of connecting to readers, I recently joined Book Daily because they said it was free (it was to sign up) like Goodreads is currently. (Goodreads though is looking to charge Authors for their Author page) Book Daily says they’ll advertise your book by emailing it to thousands of readers making them aware it’s available. This though, comes at a monthly charge. If I remember correctly, they want $50.00 bucks a month. (this may not be right, but once I read the $50.00 a month I was out of there)

Okay, once I read about the $50.00, which happened to be the same day I signed up, I haven’t been back on the Book Daily’s website.

Now get this, I’m an Author, in search of readers. (what Author isn’t) I want to keep this in perspective so be aware, there are many Author’s in search of readers. (literally, hundreds of thousands of us) Since signing up on Book Daily, (I’m now counted and considered one of their readers) they send me an email every day announcing another Authors work that is available. (I think there’s a tremendous backlog, seems I get more than one a day)

I don’t know this for sure, but I’d bet there are thousands upon thousands of Authors on Book Daily who receive a daily email hearing about another Authors works. (to me this seems not a good practice, charging Authors to tell other Authors that you have a book)

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m glad the Authors who have signed up for Book Daily’s promo got their work out there, but I’ve a feeling most of the emails Book Daily counts and tells them are readers are actually just other Authors like me. I don’t know what other Authors have done with those emails, but I’ve deleted every last one Book Daily has sent when it says book sample. I have no idea why they would count me, an Author, among their readers. I’m not one of the good ole boys.

My feeling is because I signed up as an Author, I shouldn’t be getting the daily samples and should not be counted among the readers they say they’re informing about another Authors work. Other emails they’ve sent, I’ve opened and read, but have deleted every Book Daily Book Sample.

I wonder what other Authors do with their book sample emails?

Oh well, thankfully there’s Goodreads. I just hope they don’t go the way of Book Daily and start a monthly billing for the Author Page.

I like connecting “A Stone’s Throw Away, by Carl Lee, with readers.
