Meet The Author: D.C. Stansfield
After travelling the world, this week's Meet the Author contributor D.C. Stansfield, found that instead of travelling to find them, the characters of his novel would come to him as he wrote The Assassin, The Grey Man and The Surgeon.
I have spent most of my work life travelling, starting as an engineer and then moving into sales and sales management. The more I moved up the business ladder, the further I seemed to travel until it got to a point where I was more away from home than at home.
For those of you who travel long distance for work, you will understand the ever increasing boredom it brings - a life of airports, hotels and industrial buildings usually as far away from the tourist spots as possible. Most of the time you are flying at night to avoid missing valuable selling time so not only are you working long hours, you are perpetually tired. The whole thing wears thin very quickly. As a young man I enjoyed the views from airplane and taxi windows but as I got older even this fleeting enjoyment faded as I immersed myself in emails and PowerPoint presentations.
My one saving grace was reading. I always had at least one book on the go at any one time and went through authors at a ridiculous pace. One night, I found myself at a hotel bar a long way from home with an evening to myself and nothing to read. I had had the first chapter of a book floating around in my head for some time, so with nothing to do but drink, I settled down and typed it out. There are three main characters in my book - an assassin, an intelligence officer and a breaker of men, and I felt all three had pulled up their chairs and sat down to tell me their story.
The book, The Assassin, The Grey Man and The Surgeon, ended up on Amazon.com and I have just published the follow up - To Kill a Grey Man.
Am I still travelling or have I come home? Well, that is another story.
Shortlisted for January's IPR Agent's Pick competition with the Andrew Lownie Literary Agency, D.C. Stansfield has two novels: The Assassin, The Grey Man and The Surgeon and it's sequel To Kill a Grey Man.
