Ripples in the Sin Pool

Joshua 7:12b-13 says “I will not remain with you any longer unless you destroy the things among you that were set apart for destruction. Get up! Command the people to purify themselves in preparation for tomorrow. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Hidden among you, O Israel, are things set apart for the Lord. You will never defeat your enemies until you remove these things from among you.” (New Living Translation)

We tend to hide the “small” sins in our lives, tend to think they don’t matter because we are no longer swimming in the sin pool. Somehow, we feel it is okay to dip our toes in every once in a while. But the problem with sin is it has a ripple effect. What starts out with one “little” sin, sends this ripple effect like a stone tossed into the glassy surface of calm, still waters. Our sins, no matter how small we think they are, have a way of growing in our lives and affecting others. In Joshua, the man who sinned had an effect on the whole nation. When we sin, or harbor things that are ungodly, we show an indifference to God’s Holiness. God doesn’t want us to do right most of the time, or being obedient to most of his laws. He knows the harmful effects of sin. He knows that it can overwhelm us, overtakes us, destroy lives, destroy families, and hinder our relationship with Him.

At the end of Joshua 7, Achan and his family (as well as all the plunder he hid), were stoned and burned. Stones were placed over the spot, and the place was called the Valley of Trouble. In our culture, it seems harsh to destroy him and his whole family. But sin has drastic consequences, not just in our own lives, but the lives of those around us. We should take drastic measures to rid ourselves of it. We need to take every precaution, and every effort we have to keep from being just another ripple in the sin pool.

What remains hidden in your heart or life that was set apart for destruction?

Review – Unsightly Bulges, Kim Hunt Harris

Unsightly Bulges, by Kim Hunt Harris, is a masterful blend of humor, mystery, and faith. You can’t just read a Trailer Park Princess novel – you inhabit it. You become immersed in the characters, the mystery and the story.

I was once again bowled over by the message so expertly blended into the story. Harris is not afraid to explore tough issues, but she does so through the brutally blunt and honest voice of Salem. Salem has this ability to echo our own thoughts – you know – the ones you never voice and immediately ask for forgiveness for.  But she also represents the questions we had (or maybe still have) in our walk with Christ. Harris does an amazing job of pulling the message through the story and character growth.

I tried to read several other books after reading Unsightly Bulges, and they all paled in comparison. I just wanted to head back into more of Salem's world. Thank goodness there are more Trailer Park Princess books!

Five stars for Unsightly Bulges – a must for your bookshelf!

About the Book

Another day, another dead body. It's all in a day of the life of Salem Grimes.

Salem Grimes figures even a God who works in mysterious ways wouldn’t resort to a dead body in a dumpster in answer to Salem’s prayers to help her stay on her diet – excuse me – Strat-EAT-Gic plan.

But a dead body in a dumpster it is, and now Salem and Viv, her octogenarian partner-in-crime-solving, are on the case once again. Salem finds the search for the killer a satisfactory distraction from all the things she needs distraction from – “dates” with the husband she hasn’t known for the past decade, growing jealousy of Viv’s friendship with Dale-the-Annoying-Hanger-On, and a mentor who says things that – okay, maybe Salem needs to hear, but she really doesn’t want to.

As she seeks peace amidst praying prairie dogs and too much Chinese food, Salem struggles to disentangle what she believes from what she thinks she should believe, and – most frightening of all, the possibility that she might have to figure out for herself just where the truth lies. Oh, and avoid a murderer on the loose, if she can manage it.

About the Author

[image error]Kim Hunt Harris is Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Trailer Park Princess cozy mystery comedy series.

Kim knew she wanted to be a writer before she even knew how to write. When her parents read bedtime stories to her, she knew she wanted to be a part of the story world. She started out writing children’s stories, and her stories grew as she did. She discovered a gift for humor and a love for making people laugh with her tales, and the Trailer Park Princess series was born.

Kim loves to not only make her readers laugh and entertain them with a good mystery, but also to examine the issues the everyday people face…well, every day. Issues like faith and forgiveness, perseverance and tolerance. Set in Lubbock, Texas, the fun books feature a cast of quirky characters, outrageous situations, a drama queen of a dog, and from time to time, a tear or two.

Kim lives with her husband of more than thirty years and two teenage kids in Texas.

About the Book

Colette Hillard and Elliott Ashcroft have been friends for over three years – and each is harboring a secret fondness for the other.

Elliot hasn’t dated anyone for two years – but that isn’t enough evidence to convince Colette he has feelings for her. She hangs back and waits, hopes, and prays for something to happen.

It’s been three years since Colette’s husband died serving his country, and despite her inviting smiles, Elliot refuses to ask her out. He hesitates, wondering if, and when, there will ever be a chance at a new beginning for either of them.

Then Colette leads a new Christmas program at their church to bless needy families in the community with dinner and gifts. Individuals will pair up and visit the twelve homes on their list – each visit representing a different story. Before he can second guess himself, Elliot asks Colette to be his partner.

As Elliot and Colette discover a wealth of emotions along their twelve visits, will love be among them?

Review – Ellie Claire Art Journals

The Ellie Claire Art Journals make for unique gift ideas this Christmas. These journals are made of high quality paper and binding with exquisite attention to detail, including pen loops on the binder and elastic band closures. A great gift for the art lover on your list

The Illustrated Word

Summary:

Create your own masterpiece with this journal that has forty glorious illustrations from ancient manuscripts that have been recreated as line drawings. Just as medieval monks brought Scripture to life through intricate inked illustrations in handwritten manuscripts hundreds of years ago, you can now create your own stunning keepsake that will be treasured for years to come.

My Review:

Out of the three journals, this was my favorite because it has a wider gift appeal. It’s basically a coloring book and journal together. The quality is superb. The cover is a thick, textured hardback cover and the paper is thick enough that markers won’t bleed through.

The journal pages contain beautiful illustrations and coloring pages.

Illuminate Your Story Journal

Summary:

Use this almost-lost art of illuminating letters to enhance your writing, Bible journaling, or sermon note-taking. Rich illustrated manuscripts in the Museum of the Bible’s collection inspired these gorgeous letters. Easy to follow instructions, practice pages, and encouragements guide you through the creation of amazing start letters, flourishes, and more.

My Review:

As with the other journals, the quality is excellent. This journal comes with an elastic band to keep it closed and a band on the cover for your pen. There is space to take sermon notes or use this as a prayer journal.

However, the majority of this journal is focused on creating fancy lettering. There are step-by-step instructions that lead you through the process. As a result, for gift-giving, this journal is very specific in nature. I’m not artistic, so I found the journal beautiful but impractical. My daughter loved it.

Step-by-step lettering process to help even the novice artist be successful. Journal pages have inspirational quotes.

Faith & Lettering Journal

Summary:

New from professional letterer Krystal Whitten! With guides, instructions, and tutorials, this is a fun and inspiring way to create beauty with words. It is the perfect place for journalers to practice Bible journaling, lettering quotes and verses, or decorating a page with original thoughts and plans. Exploring your God-given creativity has never been so rewarding.

My Review:

This lettering journal goes one step further and helps you create fancy letters, words, and design Scripture (for lack of a better description). There is space for journaling, but the focus is on the lettering. For me, I was not interested in this. My first thought was, “I can do this perfectly on my computer in a few minutes.” However, for those with an artistic nature, this would make the perfect gift. Beautiful pages and excellent quality.

This journal helps you refine your lettering skills. Journal pages include full-page colorful Scriptures to help inspire your own creations.
