My name is Rosalind Guy. I work as an English teacher at Wooddale High School, where I teach honors and standard classes and sponsor the Drama Club. I also am an adjunct professor at Southwest Tennessee Community College. My first book, Skinny Dipping in the Pool of Womanhood, was published in February 2013. The second book, Tattered Butterfly Wings, was published earlier this year.

I formerly worked as a reporter for the Memphis Daily News where I won several awards for my writing. Some of those articles can be found here: http://www.memphisdailynews.com/

I have been writing all my life. I love words and the power they possess. Writing frees me from all the shit that tries to weigh me down.

I typically have a problem just trying to care out time in my day so that I can write. And sometimes as I'm working on a story or poem, I might not know just yet where I'm going with the story. In that case, I know that means I need to spend more time with my characters or my material. I have a mug that has a message on the side, "I may not look busy, but I'm plotting." And that's true. I think about my stories, poems, and characters when I'm doing other things. I may be sitting in front of the television watching cartoons with my son, but believe me, my mind is always working, working, working. (less)

I also love being able to connect with my readers and having them tell me, "I feel like that too." or "I could really identify with that character." (less)

The Price of a Doll

Imagine, you’re a little girl. Maybe two. Maybe three. Ah, no, you’re four. No need to imagine. You’re sitting in the back seat with your mommy and daddy. This is your happy place. You love going places with your parents. Words like institutional racism, racist rhetoric, the white imagination, and abusive cops who assassinate black children with impunity…these words carry no real meaning for you.

"We Are Not Like Them will be a fabulous choice for book clubs, which is likely exactly what it was written for. In fact, it almost constantly throws up talking points as if the authors were working through a list of topics. I just wanted it to be mor" Read more of this review »

“All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake up in the day to find it was vanity, but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible.”
