Embracing Life's Unexpected Encounters

I have always been fascinated by the power of a single decision. A stranger opens your door, you exchange a glance across a busy room, you answer a wrong number...and suddenly your life is entwined with someone else's. So I decided to embark on an experiment to demonstrate the beauty of embracing life's unexpected connections.

As my sister-in-law and I stood on the 16th Street Mall in Denver, Colorado, we asked dozens of strangers to participate in our film. Many said no, and as a result, I know nothing about them. But the people who agreed--the ones who stopped for a moment and let us into their lives--are forever connected, however briefly, to me and to one another. I am grateful to them for taking a chance.

In this video, we quote the first paragraph of the synopsis of my novel, Devil's Food--a book that explores the bonds that can grow from these unexpected interactions.

I hope you enjoy the video as much as I loved making it!

What's Your Dessert?

It was interesting and inspiring to research gourmet food for Devil's Food, especially since I love to eat but am only an average cook. I can follow a recipe if necessary, but I generally overcook poultry (it always looks pink to me!) and leave baked goods in too long. I have no instinct in the kitchen--if the recipe doesn't tell me to do it, I'm a lost cause.

So it was a delight to learn about technique and quiz my chef friends about Italian dishes. And every time I wrote a scene with food, I got hungry. Especially the dessert scene! So I thought it would be fun to make a game out of it--What's Your Dessert?

I'm Triple Chocolate Cake! (Since I made the game, I assigned my favorites to my name and birth month--that's only fair, right?) Let me know what your dessert is, and does it fit your personality and taste? Happy reading (and eating)!
