“The first woman to patent a building plan was Harriet Irwin. With nine children underfoot, she studied architecture on her own and felt that her position as a housewife taught her to understand what was needed in house design. Her 1869 patent was titled “Improvement in the Construction of Houses” and incorporated interconnected hexagons making a large hexagon-shaped house. Her design created more space using fewer materials and was more efficient in ventilating and lighting. From her unique view as a housewife, it eliminated sharp corners, making it easier to clean.”
