Avery D. Rowan is a Chicago native whose life was shaped by the city’s West Side, the Black church tradition, and the chosen family that carried him through decades of love, loss, faith, and friendship.

His debut memoir, And Then There Was One: The Chosen Family That Saved Me, explores identity, belonging, grief, and the enduring bonds we build when family is something we choose rather than inherit.

Drawing from experiences spanning more than thirty years, Rowan writes about the resilience of Black LGBTQ+ communities with compassion, honesty, and hope.
