I slept for two days straight.
Everything we’d been through as a team over the last week had been hellish at best. We’d lost Annette, I was no longer using Evelyn Grayson’s body as a host, the staff at Grayson’s house had all been killed—save Baldrick—and the Black Ops PPD moniker had been stripped from us thanks to the fact that Q and the Directors had been playing us the entire time.
In other words, I needed the rest.
We all did.
But I also knew we had to get moving soon.
We were currently staying at Ross’s place. It was super nice, which we’d all found surprising, and it was also relatively secure—according to Ross. He had pointed out that he could only manage to keep it secure for a while, though. With everyone on Andras’s side hunting for us, and with that hunting getting more urgent every day, it was going to get to a point where Ross would be unable to keep us safe. In other words, his encryption was going to get hacked eventually.
I rolled over at the sound of a…purr?
Cruze was lying next to me, propped up on a pillow. His eyes were still closed and his paws were bent in, tucked under his chest. I knew there was the spirit of a slug possessing the cat’s form, but Cruze had gotten so used to playing the part of a cat that nobody would ever be the wiser…unless he spoke, of course.
He cracked open an eye and then began to yawn and stretch.
“How long have you been here?” I asked.
“Same as you,” he replied at the end of his yawn.
That was kind of sweet, considering he’d taken a shine to Gurub and Rainey. He’d lived with me the longest, but that was because I had possessed his “owner.” I put that in quotes because the jury is still out on who the actual owner is in a cat/human relationship. So, technically, he’d spent the most time with me, but he was really good friends with Gurub, and since Gurub and Rainey had started dating, Cruze had effectively become their cat.
At least that’s what I’d assumed.
Turns out he was just as loyal to me as ever.
“I tried to stay with Gurub and Rainey, but they keep feeling each other up. Felt like a third wheel in there, so here we are.”
“Oh,” I replied, my ego deflating. Time to change the subject. “I wonder how everyone else is doing.”
“I’ve slipped out a few times for water and such,” Cruze replied. “Except for Ross and Baldrick, they’ve all been crashed out like us.”
“Good.” I rolled onto my back and looked up at the ceiling. “We all needed the rest. It's going to be hitting the fan soon.”
“I’m amazed we’re not up to our necks in it already.”
There wasn’t much time left before the one-year anniversary of the Rite of Decimation. My House, Sinister, had been targeted by Houses Varaz, Mathen, and Tross. They’d killed everyone, except me. That was a major problem for the architect in charge of the Rite, the asshole known as Andras. This had to do with the fact that hellion law requires all members of a targeted House be killed in the Rite of Decimation. There can be no survivors. In fact, anyone who survives for a single year may come back and claim their House be restored. On top of that, they may also claim the Houses that attacked them as being under their rule. In other words, if I survived a year, I would get back House Sinister and I would also be the leader of Varaz, Mathen, and Tross. The custom goes further to say I would then execute all the leaders of those three Houses, shaming their names in the lore of hellions forever.
But it gets better than that.
Since I would be the owner of four Houses, and since I was the only remaining survivor of the Rite, hellion law would instantly mark me as queen of all hellions. Every House would fall to my rule.
It was too surreal to even imagine. Here I was, the daughter of a lowly concubine, raised to serve House Sinister as a Guard, and now sitting at the edge of possibly ruling all the Houses.
That was why the Rite of Decimation was rarely allowed to take place. It was incredibly risky.
Now, imagine all the Houses in the hellion world suddenly learning they were only months away from having a queen—and one who was the daughter of a concubine, no less.
Could anyone honestly think the majority of hellions would want that to come to fruition?
Yeah, me neither.
Andras and his goons hadn’t been able to get the job of killing me done, but now that the finish line was quickly approaching, he wasn’t going to be alone in the hunt. Once the tenth month mark hit, every House in the hellion lands would rise up their best and brightest to find and kill me. It was the only sensible thing they could do, assuming they didn’t want a queen taking over everything, of course.
So, while Ross may have been working on keeping us safe from the likes of Andras, he was about to try and take on hunters like he’d never seen before. They’d bring in Dark Witches like Bresha. They’d find hackers, bounty hunters, assassins, and every other type of power they could to find and destroy me. Money would become no object. The bounty on my head would be extreme.
There were a few, though, who wanted a monarchy again. They were in the minority, but they were a vocal and powerful minority. Whether they wanted me to be their leader or not was up for discussion. Most of them were traditionalists, meaning they would expect a certain level of piety in whoever took the throne. That definitely ruled me out. I knew their kind, though, as they used to speak at council meetings from time to time back when I was a Guard. They would latch on to me being the queen and then work to try and give me the level of refinement needed to bring honor to the position of queen.
Good luck with that.
I pushed up out of bed and steadied myself against the wall. I was clearly dehydrated, not to mention hungry as hell.
Time to see if Baldrick was still up for playing the role of servant.
I stopped and questioned myself about that thought. Obviously, spending over nine months pretending to be Evelyn Grayson—an exceedingly wealthy woman—had rubbed off on me.
Maybe I could do this queen thing, after all.
“Ugh,” I mumbled as I opened the door and let the light pour into my brain.

Is it really good to be queen?
The war is on, and Evangeline is standing right on the front lines.
The Black Ops Paranormal Police Department has been dissolved, leaving on a handful of members who are now being hunted. Their best bet is to just go underground and wait things out, allowing Eve to hit the one-year mark of survival so that she can return to the Badlands and reclaim the House of Sinister.
Eve has never been one who liked playing it safe.
Andras has a new set of allies, and they're all bent on the destruction of all past Black Ops PPD members. Worse, with the heat on him from the Houses of Varaz, Tross, and Mathen, he's becoming desperate. He'll do anything to destroy Eve and wipe out the remaining Black Ops PPD members, even if it means destroying the entirety of Los Angeles in the process.
Digging deep, Eve pulls on all the knowledge given to her by Garrick.
If she succeeds, she will take back House Sinister and have Andras and the other leaders from her rival Houses executed, and she will also claim the throne as the queen of the hellions; if she fails, not only will Los Angeles fall into a level of darkness they've never known, the Badlands will be subjected to a crippling level of organized crime.
It's time for Eve to become queen...

And then that happened...
Evangeline had finally gotten her team running perfectly. Yes, they are members of the Black Ops Paranormal Police Department, which means they are technically the team of the Directors, but that isn't how it works internally. Even the Directors are bowing to her decisions now...mostly.
That's what happens when a hellion begins to grow.
She takes over.
But the tables turn when Eve and her crew find out that the super drug being used to turn normals into crazed killers is back on the market, and it's being supported by the Los Angeles Paranormal Police Department. Having been in the Guard for the majority of her life, there are few things Eve despises more than dirty cops.
Andras, however, has the mob working smoothly at this point. He's still listing his number-one priority as finding and killing Eve, but that seems to be less of a concern to him these days. The power he's wielding topside is far greater than anything he can expect playing in House Varaz. Success at completing the Rite of Decimation would help, certainly, but he knows full well that the council will never let him rule as they should.
That means Andras has a new focus.
And that puts him at odds with Eve more than ever.
As if that wasn't bad enough, there is a new hellwolf in town who's chomping at the bit to kill Kayson, and a set of Dark Wizards who are looking to extract the Core of Discernment from Cruze.
With dirty cops handing out mind-controlling drugs like mad, Andras doing his best to bring the worst criminals into his enterprise, a new hellwolf threat, and Dark Magic users trying to unleash an old source of power...Eve has to do everything she can to keep the world intact.
But when yet another new threat is revealed, it threatens to shatter everything about the Black Ops PPD.
Pain and death are coming...

EXCERPT:
The deal had been simple…
After the Rite of Decimation against House Sinister, I escaped. The Directors saw me enter the body of Evelyn Grayson when she died from injuries sustained in a car accident. I was told that if I worked for the Directors, becoming a member of the Black Ops Paranormal Police Department, they would keep my identity a secret; otherwise, they’d allow the information regarding my whereabouts to become common knowledge. In other words, either I did their dirty work or I’d be incapable of ever finding even a modicum of peace. But it was good for me, too, because it gave me the opportunity to assassinate people who worked with, were part of, or belonged to the Houses of Varaz, Tross, and Mathen. Anything I could do to gain revenge, even in the smallest of ways, made working for the Black Ops PPD worthwhile.
“She brought a normal into our headquarters,” Q replied, standing formally while pointing at me.
“You may sit,” Leighton stated.
Q did so.
“Why would you bring a normal here, Evangeline?” asked Simone, a moment later.
“He was an innocent in everything that was happening.”
“So?” grumbled Abner. “We do not cater to normals.”
“I’m well aware of that,” I replied, “but I have a code that I live by. As part of the Guard of the House of Sinister, I—”
“You are no longer a part of the Guard,” Leighton interrupted. “You are a member of the Paranormal Police Department. Your Guard rules and status do not fit here.”
I took a deep breath. “I am a part of the Guard, Director Leighton. Until the House of Sinister falls completely, which means until I am dead, I will always be a member of the Guard.”
There was a moment of silence as the tension in the room was raised.
“You must decide where your loyalty rests, Evangeline,” Leighton stated finally.
“House of Sinister,” I answered without hesitation. “That will always be the case, make no doubt about it. My secondary loyalty falls to Kayson, Peggy, and the members of the PPD at my house.” I pointed at Q. “He can suck it, and so can the rest of you. I’m doing this job only because we have an agreement. That’s it. The moment my tenure is up, I will return to the Badlands and claim my right to control the Houses that sought to destroy mine.”
The room was again silent.
“I will do my job, Directors,” I added, keeping my tone stern. “I have given my word to that effect. But I will never give up my code of honor, regardless of what you threaten me with or choose to do to me. If you can’t deal with that, then I’ll just go ahead and kill Q now and then face whatever wrath you have in store for me.”
The quiet that followed was interrupted by the light giggling that emanated from Kayson. He began a slow clap.
“What is the meaning of this mocking clap?” Leighton demanded.
“Just that I’m with her,” Kayson replied. “You guys are all pricks. You’re like a large pair of testicles with three hairs on them.” He pointed at the boxes. “You guys are the hairs. Under that set of nuts is the asshole.” That’s when he’d pointed at Q. Then, he motioned toward me. “Eve, on the other hand, is more like me. She’s cool, rough around the edges, and mean as shit in a fight. Also like me, she’s got the guts and the skills to do the dirty work that you douchebags aren’t capable of handling.”

I crouched on the ledge of the window, looking down to make sure the coast was clear. While I had no intention of missing my jump, I wasn’t foolish enough to not think of contingencies.
As expected, the second lackey was patrolling below.
I waited until he reached the end of the building and turned before I made my leap.
It wasn’t exactly graceful, but I caught the pipe on the other building and waited a few seconds before climbing.
Before long, I was at the top of the building.
I hadn’t climbed over the edge yet, though, because I wanted to get a good look at Moloch’s other goon.
He was facing the doorway that allowed access to the roof. His crossbow was in hand and he was patiently standing there with it pointed at the door. Clearly he’d planned to release the arrow the moment the door opened, and he probably wouldn’t have even bothered to verify it was me before doing it. If some poor sucker happened to go up on the roof for whatever reason, it’d be the last thing they did.
This left me an option, though.
I could take off right now, darting across the top of the roof of the building I was on and slip away into the night. They’d sense I was on the move, eventually, but it’d take a minute or so.
It was the smart move.
“There!” yelled the voice of the assassin below.
The soldier on the opposite roof spun and spotted me as well.
“Fuck,” I hissed as I pulled myself over the lip of the building, dropping flat on my back as an arrow sailed overhead.
So much for slipping away into the night.

The only thing I could think of was that the process of possession wasn’t simply a soul taking over a body. That’s what most people thought, but it wasn’t the case. It was more of a situation where a hellion or a demon merged with a body, almost like a dimensional shift that allowed us to blend. Once inside, we were the stronger of the two personalities, and could therefore take control. Sometimes, the merging was so deep that the possessor couldn’t get out. If the host was killed, the underlying being would emerge.
Assuming that was the case, it meant that I’d really had two sets of tats and connectors when I was merged with Grayson.
I wanted to ask more questions of Kayson regarding the specifics of how the nanite technology managed this process, but the look on his face made it clear that he’d given me all he knew about that particular aspect of the process.
“Does she stay like that indefinitely or what?” I ventured.
“Three days,” he answered. “After that, she fades away and that’s that.”
Three days was plenty of time to do most any job.
I nodded. “Does the transformation have to be done in this room?”
“Nope.”
“Then why did you have me…” I paused and gave him a look. “You knew I was going to be naked.”
“Duh,” he laughed.
“Kiss my ass, Kayson.”
“I’ll RSVP to that invitation straightaway.”
I put a hand on my hip, but instantly recognized that my power move was doing nothing more than making his interest grow.
“I think I can take it from here,” I stated.
“I don’t think I can give it from here,” he replied with a squint. “I mean, it’s above-average and all, but I’d definitely need to be a little closer if I was…” He stopped, clearly catching the look on my face. “Oh, you meant finding something you want to wear, right?”
I pointed at the door. “Out.”
“Right.”
As soon as he exited the room, I began searching for an outfit. One of the things that Garrick had taught us during training was that green was a wise choice. Black was too obvious and blue was too flashy. Green, especially of the dark variety, went relatively unnoticed.
“Green it is,” I said as I dug through the various outfits.
Once I’d picked everything out and put it on, I stepped in front of the mirror that stood next to the frozen body of Evelyn Grayson.
I looked good.
I’m not sure I’d call it something an assassin would wear, but that made it all the better since that was kind of the point.
A dark green shirt, dark jeans, a silver-buckled belt, and a long sleeve, green bolo jacket made up the breadth of the outfit.
It was nice to see my actual face, which was slightly more youthful than Grayson’s, or maybe it just looked that way because of my olive skin. I also much preferred my purplish hair to her blond, and there was no topping the glowing blue eyes of a hellion when she was ready for battle, and I was ready for battle.
With a hint of menace, I summoned my dual blades.
Then, just to get the full effect, I raised my hands to the side and allowed a couple of energy orbs to form.
Okay, now I looked like an assassin.

Still, he gave me a little information, which was better than nothing. It wasn’t much to go on, and I had the feeling that Evelyn Grayson was not as fond of Cruze as he was letting on.
That’s when I caught sight of a picture where she was holding the little bugger up close to her, nuzzling against him like he was the greatest thing since perfectly cut diamonds.
Ugh.
“Everyone thinks I have amnesia,” I said, after a while. “Selective anyway.”
“Don’t we all?”
“I mean from the accident.”
“What accident?”
“Oh right,” I said, “you don’t know.”
He stopped the licking entirely. “Of course I don’t know. I’m a fucking cat. So how about you enlighten me?”
I gave him the lowdown on the accident and how Grayson had died, but I wasn’t about to get into how I’d come to be there or why I’d possessed her body.
“You can surmise the rest of what happened,” I said to him, keeping the veil of secrecy intact.
“Yeah,” the cat replied. “Sucks, though. Eve was a crazy bitch, but she was pretty cool to me. Of course, she didn’t know I was anything more than a cat, but still.”
I took another glance around the room.
“Anything I should know about this place?” I asked. “Any secrets or hidden rooms?”
He pointed, which looked really weird coming from a cat.
“Over there, behind that wall,” he said.
“What’s in there?”
“All kinds of crazy shit,” he replied. “Whips, chains, and other…stuff.”
I cringed.
It was one thing if Evelyn Grayson had been the one delivering punishment, but quite another if she was receiving it. I mean, I enjoyed a rut as much as anyone else, probably more than most, but growing up as the daughter of a concubine taught me that you didn’t want to be on the receiving end of the punishment.
“Was she the…uh…” I trailed off.
“She was the top,” he answered, giving me a look.
“Good,” I said with a gulp. “Still, I won’t be playing that game with anyone. I’ll just use the amnesia excuse.”
“It was only with the limo driver anyway. You’re safe.”
Whew.
“Point is that it’s a hidden room,” Cruze continued. “Might be useful in the event a Retriever crew is sent for you.”
He was fishing, obviously.
“Nice try,” I said with a smirk. “Look, I’m going to get some shut-eye. It’s been a hell of a day. If you want to hang out in the whips and chains room while I—”
“I’m good, thanks,” he interrupted. “I usually sleep on the bed with you…erm, Eve.”
“Yeah, that’s about as likely as me dressing up in leather and calling you a bad boy.”
“Ew.”

“Ew.”
