JOSÉ MANUEL SOBRAL é licenciado em História, pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa (1976) e Doutor em Antropologia, pelo Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e Empresa (1993). É investigador principal do Instituto de Ciências Sociais (ICS-UL), onde coordena o Programa de Doutoramento em Antropologia. Foi Presidente da Associação Portuguesa de Antropologia (2001-2006) e é o director actual da revista Análise Social. Tem-se interessado pelas teorias do nacionalismo e a formação da identidade nacional portuguesa numa perspectiva comparada, dos sentimentos nacionais de imigrantes em Portugal, do racismo e das desigualdades de género.
