I was born in Queens in 1977 and raised in Brooklyn. I left New York at sixteen. Today I live in Florida with my wife, and I drive a truck for a living. I wrote Stay Down over years of late nights because my brother Melo told me our story deserved to be told.

It's for my brother Ruly, who loved every stray he ever found and didn't make it out. He was fourteen.

I didn't soften any of it. I wrote it the way I'd tell it to you across a table — plain and true. There's no big dramatic victory at the end. What I got was quieter and better: a steady home, a marriage, a son who never had to go to bed hungry. For where I came from, that's the whole win.

If you came up the way I did, you're not the only one.

It Happened Again

Last week, Stay Down climbed to around #3,800 in the Kindle Store.

Today, it happened again.

The book reached #4,097 overall and hit #1 in Survival Biographies & Memoirs. Right now, it is still sitting at #3 in that category.

The first time it happened, I didn’t know whether it was a one-time spike.

Seeing it happen again tells me it wasn’t.

More people are finding the book. The Amazon rating is now 4. Read more of this blog post »

As usual, I went into this book completely blind; no research, not even the summary. All I knew was that it was a memoir and that Brooklyn somehow factored into it.
