The Spirit Room is now one of four finalists up for the Historical Novel Society’s HNS INDIE AWARD 2015. The winner will be announced in late June.

I was excited before when The Spirit Room made the shortlist with 8 other wonderful novels but now my book is being read with just 3 others for consideration for this award. This is truly truly truly a great honor.  Thank you to the Historical Novel Society! The Spirit Room has been selected for the The Historical Novel Society’s HNS INDIE AWARD 2015 shortlist. Finalists will be announced in early May.

The Spirit Room has just received a fantastic review by Historical Novel Society editor, Sarah Johnson. Also, the book is an Historical Novel Society Editor’s Choice this quarter!

Author Marschel Paul does an excellent job of creating the time, tone and atmosphere of this repressive, conflicted and fascinating period of American history. Although the characters and especially Izzie are equipped with modern-day sensibilities, they are more Jane Austen than Bridget Jones. A solid and balanced combination of dialogue, description and exposition and an authentic atmosphere of unending tension make this a potent combination that’s hard to put down.

I had great fun the last couple of weeks pulling together images I had collected while researching 19th Century settings in New York state and city for my novel. Then I cruised around the infinite resource called the internet and found some new images. From there, I played with my beloved iPhoto and came up with a moody mix slideshow for The Spirit Room. I found out late last night that The Spirit Room is a finalist in the Chaucer Awards for Historical Fiction 2013.

Then I couldn’t sleep. I am truly honored (and sleep deprived now as well).
