I enjoy writing stories that do not follow trends, give people easy answers, or start reassuring the reader at the last minute. I love to build dread slowly, beneath the surface, until the pressure cracks the facade of normalcy, and by the time anyone realizes it, the trap is sprung.

I trust my readers. I hate being spoon-fed “the point” or lectured to by a book. I like giving readers room to make their own determinations without telling them what to think or how to feel. That kind of respect feels like it is disappearing, and I think it matters.(less)

I am currently writing my next gothic horror novel, set in Philadelphia in 2006. Here's the synopsis:

June used to be someone in the scene. She spent her entire life playing music. It wasn’t just what she did, it was her whole identity. She had a band, a record label, a reason to exist. Now the band is gone, local musicians ignore her, and even the people she thought were her friends have turned their backs.

On a hot summer night, after one final rejection, June walks out of her house and into the streets of South Philly hell-bent on going numb. She scores drugs, buys beer, and heads to an abandoned pocket park to get high.

What happens next is an unhinged descent through tortured memories, a buried past, and the dangerous life she has kept hidden from everyone.

DEBASER is a modern gothic rock n roll horror novel of twisted psychology, sexual damage, scene decay, betrayal, degradation, and murder. For adult readers only.(less)

Through Glass: The Fog

Dark foggy passageway

It was a cold, wet night and a murky fog closed around him like smoke. It drifted low between the buildings and turned the flame of the gas lamps to weak yellow smears against the dark. The side streets and alleys were engulfed by it until they looked half submerged at a distance.

The power of The Cipher isn't the Funhole. It is the attention that is paid to it. Koja understands that horror can begin as simple fascination before it leads to ruin.

Dracula is an influential gothic vampire novel built on a trail of historical ephemera. As the reader, you're not just being told a story. You are piecing it together from the evidence left behind.

Though it can be a bit emotionally vague, disjointed,

“It was clear that the city had none of the dignity of older capitals. It did not swagger like London, preen like Paris, or prize artistry like Vienna. Manchester was a brute. It pushed up its sleeves, and it smoked, and hammered, and grew.”
