All I can add to the reply above is that I don't really know what I'm aiming for until quite late in the writing process; e.g. with 'The Ghost Writer', several of the 'Viola Hatherley' stories came first: I knew there would be a contemporary frame around them, but the first version of Gerard's story looked nothing like the finished book. Which didn't begin to take shape until well into the second year of work...(less)
