Thanks for your question and thank you for sharing your impressions of Love in English.

Like most writers, I came to love books as a reader. I found so much joy and insight in books, I wanted to be part of creating that for others.

As for advice for aspiring writers, there is a lot: read everything, particularly the genre(s) you want to write, but also outside those too. Take classes, even free ones online if ones in person aren't available. Find your "people," others who are looking to work on their writing as well. Let them critique your work so you can see how what you intend to say is received by readers. (It's not always the way we think!).

But if I had to narrow it down to one bit of advice, it's this: keep going. Persevere. There will undoubtedly be rejection (especially for those looking to get "traditionally" published). There were many times when I wondered if I had what it took, if any agent would ever want to have me as a client or if an editor would ever buy a book I wrote. It's a tough business, trying to have the stories of our hearts intersect with the market, what people will buy. But it's rewarding and meaningful, so keep going. That may mean learning something new, getting a different critique, taking another class, scrapping a story you love and starting a new one... whatever the next step is, take it, then take the one after that.(less)

Hogwarts would be the first one that pops into my mind. I'd like to figure out how to get into the paintings.

But, actually, one that gets a little deeper into my own yearnings is the post-apocalyptic world of Station Eleven. I've made no secret of the fact that the collapse of modern society fascinates me. Of course it would be awful and I hope it never happens. But if it did: what would it take to survive? Who would make it? If I could go to the post-flu world of Station Eleven, I'd test my mettle. Also, I'd join the Traveling Symphony and try to convince them to let me write plays for them to perform.(less)

Happiness is bad for writing. Is writing bad for happiness?

This past year, I went welding, fell in love, stuck my toes in the sand, traipsed through Buenos Aires, slow danced in several antique stores, spent lazy afternoons in my favorite places in New York,  laughed more than in the last five years combined, and committed to my health in a way that has been […]

“Fuckface. A face that likes to do sex? Doosh nozl? Shit biscuit? Duck butter? Bananas. Like “crazy”? If I had to pick a fruit that is crazy, I’d pick pomegranates, with their juicy beads hiding in impossible recovecos, from which it takes an hour to free them. If that’s not bananas, I don’t know what”

“He wears happy well. That is a new expression I have learned. To wear an emotion, like it is clothes. I like it.”
Maria E. Andreu, Love in English

“In Spanish, 'estoy' gives you a way out.
Here, 'I am' makes everything sound like an identity, not a thing that can pass, like in Spanish.”

Jeremy I want to apologize for the all the recommendations from me today. I wanted to share the Stoker Award news, and I only pressed the send button once--I'm not sure what happened.

Argh...this is terrible...

Again, I'm very sorry.

-Jeremy

Jeremy Thanks for the friendship, Maria!

Here’s wishing you a nifty 2008 filled with noiseless noses, neato nicknames, noble Nebraskans, gnarly narcoleptic nebulas, and novel novels about nut-eating narwhals and novercaphobic gnats.

I thought I'd let you know that my novel “Vacation” has been nominated for the best Horror Novel of 2007 in the Preditors & Editors Readers' Poll. So far it's ranked 4th.

In case you're interested in voting, feel free to visit the website here:

Thanks again!
