KIM SAVAGE is the author of the critically acclaimed In Her Skin (ALA Best YA Fiction 2019; Eliot Rosewater Finalist), Beautiful Broken Girls (Kirkus' 10 Best YA 2017), and After the Woods (Kirkus and School Library Journal starred; Booklist’s Top 10 YA Crime Fiction), all with Farrar, Straus, Giroux. Her novels have been published in Spain, Brazil, and Turkey and have been optioned by Amazon Studios and Awesomeness TV. Kim’s eye—and her pen—are drawn to classism, privilege, and the excesses of modern parenting. ...more

It's nice to hear from you, and thanks for the question, it's such a good one! ATW definitely has some dark themes, but lighter ones too: beauty and bravery, what makes a real friendship, loyalty and freedom. Told through Julia's point of view, there were times when it was a relief to get of her head! I think that as long as the places a writer goes make sense for the story, and nothing is gratuitous, road blocks won't appear. At least that's how it was for me.

As for what inspired me, I was interested in bravery in its many forms, especially when it comes to girls. We have so many female characters in YA who demonstrate courage through physical strength and daring. I wanted to create two characters who have to use their wits--and in Liv's case, make unthinkable sacrifices--to be free.
