Julie Broad is an Amazon #1 bestselling author, award-winning entrepreneur, and the founder of Book Launchers. Her books have won more than 20 awards, and her publishing advice has been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, Yahoo! Business, and on national TV.

Julie knows what kills most nonfiction books: They’re boring, and they blend in. Through her #noboringbooks method and popular YouTube channel, BookLaunchers.TV, she’s helped thousands of authors create books that stand out in a crowded market. She’s also the creator of Author Launch Kit, the first software built specifically to help nonfiction authors market and sell their books.

Originally from Canada, Julie now lives in Las Vegas with her husband, son, and Blitzy—a sweet, timid rescue do

How to Start Writing a Prescriptive Nonfiction Book

Most people who set out to write a prescriptive nonfiction book hear a voice in their head whispering one of three things:

No one is going to want to read this book.Someone might like to read this book. This book is for everyone!

To be fair, that voice can rotate through all three on any given day. And while that’s relatable, it’s not helpful.

Let’s start with something that is helpful: Ignore 1 and 3

“When you haven’t experienced struggle, pain, fear, or deep hurt, it’s difficult to write a book. If you haven’t tried and failed, you don’t really have lessons to share. Learning doesn’t come from success. Learning comes from making mistakes and things going wrong.”
Julie Broad, Self-Publish & Succeed: The No Boring Books Way to Writing a Non-Fiction Book that Sells

“After five years, I did the math around what I made from the sale of my first book, More than Cashflow: The Real Risks and Rewards of Profitable Real Estate Investing. At the time, I earned $68,000 from the sale of books through Amazon, Kindle, bookstores, and libraries (not including the more than 1,000 books sold in bulk deals). On retail sales alone, if I had a traditional publishing deal, I would have made $8,892—more than 80 percent less.”
Julie Broad, Self-Publish & Succeed: The No Boring Books Way to Writing a Non-Fiction Book that Sells

“Search books that will compete with your book and read the reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. Read what people like but also focus on what they don’t like. What do they want that is a bit different and missing from existing books? I’m not looking for haters; I’m looking for people who provide constructive ideas. For example, while doing research for a client writing a book on handling cancer treatments, I noticed a competing book had several comments that said the book was great but neglected the emotional aspect of dealing with cancer. This helped us advise her that there was an opportunity to position her book with more of an emotional component.”
