Why I Am Taking Time Off From Writing Romantic Suspense

The world feels extra heavy right now. Anyone else relate? School shootings, a young father and advocate for civil discourse assassinated, women murdered. Need I go on? I’d rather not.

When I began my writing journey, I couldn’t imagine writing anything but romantic suspense. I grew up on Linda Chaikin, Susan May Warren, Dani Pettrey, and my all time favorite, Dee Henderson. These women write epic romantic suspense and are masters are weaving in their faith in the process. Even as a young reader...

Searching for Horses

It’s a request every time we drive to my parents’ house: “Momma, can we drive by the horses?” And it’s an easy yes. A short little detour takes us by the field, and every time we draw close, I hope the horses are out grazing instead of hiding from the Texas heat in the barn set too far back from the street.

This time was like all the others. I checked for cars coming up behind us and then slowed to a crawl, then a stop, scanning the field. “Ah, guys, I’m so sorry. I don’t see them.” I looked all...

Ever Wonder Where Some Stories Originate?

Brainstorming may be my favorite part of watching a book come to life. Before all the plot lines and edits and grammar get all twisted up in the creativity, there just exists an idea. At least that’s how it is for me. Usually it’s a scene or maybe even a character. Turns out, one of my favorite authors, C.S. Lewis wrote about this very thing in his essay “On Stories.”

For my current hockey romance, my story idea originated with two hockey players (USA vs Canada) and an epic love story that bega...

Water, Popsicles, and Pizza Nights

It’s sweet summertime, and I am here for all the water fun, popsicles, and pizza and movie nights with my kids (which we actually do all year but seem extra fun in the summer). It has been two months of celebrating in our house. Our little man turned 2, and his personality is blossoming! We love it.Our little lady turned 4, and I LOVE seeing how the Lord is developing her.We celebrated Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, our first vacation with 5 of us (whew!), and my cousin’s wedding is this weekend...

The Best Work

Our newest Little Mister is in the house, and for those who weighed in on the hair color debate, here’s what I’ll tell ya: it depends on the lighting and what part of his head you are looking at. We see brown, blonde, and red all sprinkled in. He’s a sweet, go-with-the-flow baby so far, and we love having him!As my husband continues to remind me, we are now outnumbered and running a zone defense. I think we are just becoming experts in dependence on the Lord and managing crazy. Three under age...

A Lot Like Life

April is here, and it’s baby month for our family, which means we have both been furiously cleaning and reorganizing and writing and rewriting to-do lists to prepare to hibernate a bit. I know that’s not really a thing in the spring time, but it is with a newborn, especially after a c-section.My husband recently asked our three-year-old if she thought her new baby brother would come out with dark hair like mommy, red hair like her, blonde hair like her other brother, or no hair like daddy. She...

I Love to Hate Editing

Hey friends! It’s me again with all things March! We are a month out (or less) from meeting our newest little addition to the family. We are spring cleaning and reorganizing in preparation.I have grand plans to add a little curb appeal to the front of our house. TBD on how that will go as we prepare for a newborn. I might be a little too ambitious. And my edits, are FINALLY moving along. Truly, I have a love-hate relationship with editing. On one hand, editing always makes the story bett...

When Life Throws You Curve Balls

Hi friends!January was LONG and twisty for us. I know we aren’t alone. I saw a lot of memes floating around social media citing January as the longest year ever. Not gonna lie, it did make me feel better. That’s exactly how I felt! Enter February, and I turned in a book, started working on edits and home insurance and all the fun things that need to be locked down before baby gets here in T-minus 7 weeks or less, and then I got a big PIVOT…again.Edits came back, and they were not what I ant...

Redo on New Year?

Hi friends! Happy January! Anyone need a redo on New Years? Our crew rang in the new year with the flu. It was NOT how I wanted to dive into January or end Christmas season with my family. While January 1 is just another day, it has always felt like a clean slate of fresh possibilities to me, and I feel like I missed it.But it’s never too late to start something new. In fact, we did a New Year’s redo on January 10, once everyone stopped running fever. We had a fire going, a yummy, warm dinner...

A Book and a Baby Due in 2025

Our little family has had a lot going on as we stepped back into school season for my husband. Then cue gymnastics for Little Miss (it may be the cutest thing ever watching 3 year olds try to be coordinated). Little Man is growing and RUNNING everywhere. Keeping up with him when we are out and about has turned into a full time job. The kid will not be contained. Then there’s the writing front. I had a fun meeting with my publisher, editor, and the other authors for my collection recently, where...
