Fear the Dark: The Best Horror Movies for Halloween
by
Julie Thibodeau
Whenever I browse the internet searching for the best horror movies and come across a Top 100 list of best horror, I always find myself frowning. Some of these lists include films I would never watch while ignoring or omitting some of the better though lesser-known, greatest horror movies ever made.
I don’t pretend to know what’s wrong with Hollywood’s long dry spell of good scary movies. The beginning of jump-scare movies which original drew viewers to the theatre has saturated the horror film market making anything truly frightening obsolete.
Seriously, when jump-scares or gratuitous violence are the backbone of your film, your audience is going to get very, very bored if the story and plot aren’t the best they’ve ever seen. And let’s face it, the average filmmaker doesn’t pour a lot of money into producing the best ever horror film. Unless we’re talking about Ridley Scott, Clive Barker, John Carpenter or Guiermo Del Toro, horror is still produced on a low budget with a lot of CGI, jump-scares, shaky digital camera filming and blue-screen acting.
But that’s not what predominates this list. I’ve been watching horror movies since I was in my mid-teens and horror films have yet to make a comebackof the kind of blockbuster horror movie-goers got in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s and has yet to turn this genre around. So without further delay, here are my lists of best horror movies for Halloween or whenever you’re wanting to scare yourself silly.
Ghosts, hauntings, curses and possessions: House on Haunted Hill, Ghost Ship, 13 Ghosts, Paranormal Activity (2007), House, The Conjuring (2013), The Ring or the original: Ringu (1998), Silent Hill, Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Others (2001), The Fog (1980), The Blair Witch Project (1999) and The Grudge.
Creature Features: The Relic, Resident Evil, American Werewolf in Paris, Cloverfield, Resident Evil, Phantoms, Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Forgotten, The Happening, Slither, The Cabin in the Woods (2012), The Babadook (2014), Ginger Snaps (2000), The Descent (2005), Lights Out (2016), Krampus (2015) and Prometheus.
Classic Horror/ Cult Classics: Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), The Exorcist (1973), Fright Night (1985), Amityville Horror, Halloween (1978 and unrated remake), The Thing (1982 and the prequel), The Shining (1980), A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Christine, Carrie (1976), American Werewolf in London, Poltergeist (1982), Psycho (1960), Rosemary’s Baby (1968), Village of the Damned, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), The Birds (1963), Halloween (1978), The Omen (1976), The Stuff (1985), The Prince of Darkness (1987) and Hellraiser (1987).
Zombies and the Undead: Evil Dead (remake), 28 Days Later, The Crazies, Shawn of the Dead, Night of the Living Dead ,
Dawn of the Dead, Army of Darkness and Zombieland,
Last but not least, Neflix has a few good low budget flicks available as well as a small selection of big-screen flicks, though these are from Canada’s Neflix selection. Other countries will have different titles available. It Follows (2015), Occulus, As Above So Below, Evil Dead (remake), The Rezort, Re-Kill, Under the Bed, Harbinger Down, Insidious 3, The Last Days on Mars, Infini and The Descent.
So there you have it, a massive selection of horror movies I believe are “must-sees” for any lover of a good scare or horror movie aficionado. With any luck, you’ll find something here you haven’t yet seen.

Excerpt 1 (PG)
The sound of flesh being ripped from the bone drew Faye Lynn’s attention back to the beast. The rich scent of blood filled her beak. Her stomach growled with longing. She watched him devour the deer, feeling the glory of his victory over his prey. She again admired the sleek lines of the wolf.
Oh, what a creature. I wish I could transform into such a lovely beast.
His dark coat glistened where the sunlight caressed the smooth pelt. Her gaze slid along the hindquarters of his legs to the heavy sacks of his testicles. He would be hungry for sex after his kill.
Faye Lynn wondered about his skills as a mate. She imagined his toned body covering hers, pounding into her with a passion only she could satisfy. Her heart pulsed with eagerness to enjoy him as a lover.
A soft coo whispered through the air.
Oh, feather ticks. Her weak bird frame required rest. Only by changing back into her human form could she reenergize her muscles and bones.
The colors of the sky were changing. The red brute in the west fought for a toe hold on the horizon while the sun raced in the other direction to escape the monster.
If she hurried, she might get back to her clothes before the sky grew dark. Her gaze stroked the wolf’s coat one last time. She shouldn’t have hung around, drooling over the sexy creature. His mate back in his den probably filled every one of his lustful cravings and provided him with plenty of pups to play with.
With a small hop, she spread her wings and glided for a moment. Her flight path carried her above the greedy wolf devouring his kill.
His head turned. His black eyes tracked her course. She pumped her wings to avoid his sharp teeth. He looked ready to add her to the menu and sent an evil glare in her direction. A snap of his jaw warned her not to stop for a parcel to eat. An updraft carried her to the tops of the trees and away from the beast.

Blurb: Heal A Heart
Lexi Donovan boards a train and cowardly flees to her grandmother’s home in Louisville when her crush, Cooper Grayson, returns to Bardstown from San Francisco and immediately seeks her father’s permission to court her after she’s already accepted an engagement ring from her best friend, Silas Reilly. She returns to town with a new husband, Luke Weston. A shot rings out during their picnic together. The two men who claim to love her are both suspects.
Excerpt
Soon after Cooper was gone forever, Lexi permitted her relationship with Silas to develop into a serious commitment. When she turned seventeen in March, he presented her with a small diamond ring and asked her to marry him. She only agreed after he promised to wait until her next birthday for the wedding to take place. She would have a year to get used to the idea of matrimony. Eighteen seemed an appropriate age for her to become a wife.
Silas first needed to seek her father’s permission to court her and kept finding an excuse to put off their talk. He, of course, was scared to death of Heath Donovan’s legend. Her father stood about a head taller than most men. At the young age of nineteen, he witnessed a much older fellow leer at her mother and determined the once-over was inappropriate for a married woman. The situation escalated into a fight in which he knocked his opponent out cold with one swift punch from his large fist.
The men in town did not dare cross him after the altercation. Silas’ grandfather was a good friend and had once commented to her fiancé, “I pity the poor boy who ever falls for the fair Lexi. I’m sure Heath will kill any male who has the gall to glance his daughter’s way.”
Silas had given Lexi the ring over four weeks prior. She kept it safely hidden in a box inside her top dresser drawer. He promised to speak to her father that very day. She traveled along as he made a trek into town for some supplies to make certain the conversation took place. He planned on the long-awaited visit as soon as he escorted her home. She hoped he would finally be able to follow through.
Cooper, of all people, was outside his family’s general store, and Lexi spotted him coming her way. Before she could react, he took her in his arms and planted a passionate kiss on her lips that she never wanted to end. She stared into his magnificent blue eyes. Too much time had passed since their last coquetry. She suddenly realized how much she longed to see him again.
He beamed a giant grin as he spoke. “Lex, you are definitely a sight for sore eyes.”
Lexi had always wondered what it would be like to lock lips with Cooper. Now she knew. The kiss was utterly amazing.
Silas cleared his throat. The sound forced her back to reality and made her remember the man who she shared a commitment with. She pulled away brusquely and unleashed a scolding.
“Cooper Grayson, you’ve been gone a whole year, so I suppose you wouldn’t know Silas and I are a couple. I’d appreciate you showing more respect in the future.”

Author Bio for G.C. Meadows
My love for writing started with poetry and short stories in elementary school. The past seven years have been spent harnessing my vivid imagination into three series of contemporary and historical romance novels. My books are meant to entertain and promote love, the greatest emotion known to human kind. Even through trials and tragedies, including a murder or more, the heroines in my tales always have a happy ending (or happy for now until the sequel) with a man they profoundly love.

Message from G.C. Meadows
Reading and writing are pursuits I have enjoyed since early childhood. I dreamed of starting a book for many years before actually putting pen to paper (more accurately fingers to keyboard). Finishing that first book, and now others, helped make my life more fulfilling. Do not live with regrets. Reach for the stars. Your fondest wish may come true.

Spirits of the Heart
Supernatural Suspense/Romance by Claire Gem
Finalist in the “I Heart Indie Awards”
An addiction counselor & a security guard struggle to free two, lost spirits trapped inside an abandoned mental asylum.
Laura Horton returns from college to move in with an old friend & start her career. But her homecoming is jarring. Her friend has moved out unexpectedly, leaving Laura alone with the gorgeous but intimidating ex-boyfriend—in a house that snugs up to an ancient graveyard.
Officer Miller Stanford is a man with a shattered past. His alcoholic dad destroyed their family, a weakness Miller is terrified will consume him too. The last thing he needs is a sexy, blonde addiction counselor watching his every move. When he begins to see specters in the dark, he starts questioning his own stability.
But Laura sees her too—a pathetic child-spirit searching for her father. Can they unravel the mysteries of Talcott Hall without jeopardizing their love—and lives—in the process?
~~~
Here’s an excerpt showing one of Miller’s first encounters with the child-spirit:
“Hey. Little girl. Let me help you,” Miller tried again, and the child finally lowered her hands. She was younger than he’d first thought—ten, maybe. Tears streaked her reddened cheeks, glistening in the beam of his headlights. Her pale, golden hair was baby fine and wispy, but tousled and disheveled. As though it hadn’t seen a brush in good long time.
She met his gaze with eyes like the man’s, clear and blue and strangely luminescent. The sadness Miller saw behind them made his chest ache.
“Where did your friend go, sweetheart? The man who came out with you. Where did he go?”
She stared at him with lips quivering before her face crumpled again. “I don’t know. I don’t know where Daddy is. I’ve been looking and looking for him. Every time I think I’ve found him, he goes away.”
Miller swallowed. Yeah, that’s one way to describe the mysterious vanishing act.
He drew in a breath and tried again. “What’s your name, sweetie? Was that your daddy with you?”
Head bobbing, the tears flowed freely now, and she wouldn’t take her eyes off Miller’s face. He felt a lump growing in his own throat, as though she was somehow transferring her pain to him. His hands, clasped in front of him, began to shake.
When she spoke again, her voice took on an echoed quality, as though she were receding into an empty culvert. “I’m Greta. And I’m looking for my daddy. He used to live here. But I keep coming back to find him, and nobody knows where he is.” She dropped her chin to her chest and ground her knuckles against her eyes.
“Greta,” he repeated, a stab of pity piercing his gut. So freaking pathetic. A forlorn little girl . . .his own memories rose up like foul-smelling steam. Swallowing hard, he pressed on. “Greta, honey, what’s your last name?”
When she looked up, Miller gasped. Behind her, against the fence, a bright red McDonald’s French fry box clung to the base of the chain link. Directly behind her, yet he could see it clearly. That’s when he realized he could see . . .right . . .through her.
