Ellie Marney is a multi-award-winning, bestselling author of thrillers for teens and adults. Her titles include the New York Times bestseller None Shall Sleep, the Kirkus-starred sequel, Some Shall Break, and the electrifying finale All Shall Mourn. Ellie's other titles include ARA Historical Novel Prize-nominated The Killing Code and Australian library favorite Every Breath. Her debut adult thriller No One Is Safe is arriving 10th February 2026.

Ellie has spent a lifetime researching in mortuaries, talking to autopsy specialists, and asking former spies how to make explosives from household items - now she lives quite sedately in south-eastern Australia with her family. Find sign-ups for her newsletter, The Black Hand, at her website, an

Hi! Here's another update to my answer to this question!
I'm thrilled to announce that SOME SHALL BREAK, the sequel to NONE SHALL SLEEP, is releasing in June 2023 through LBYR (USA) and Allen&Unwin (Aus/Oceania).
It's been a long road to publication for this book! But I'm absolutely stoked that I get to share it, and it's largely come about because of the response to NONE SHALL SLEEP from readers, which is amazing. So hold tight, because there's more Emma, Simon, Travis and Kristin coming your way soon :)
I've been keeping people in the loop via my newsletter The Black Hand - https://elliemarney.substack.com/ - if you'd like to get the latest news fast. A massive thank you to everyone who read and loved and shared NONE SHALL SLEEP, I really can't tell you how much I appreciate the support - and now we get another book!

Halloweeeeeeeeeen

It’s the time of ghouls, spectres, and horror books – huzzah!

While we don’t go as hog-wild for Halloween here in Australia as people do in other places (*cough* the USA *cough*), there are still a few benefits in celebrating the eve of All Hallow’s Day.

The Black Hand is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subsc

“You don't have to pretend with me, you know.' He reaches out and tucks a strand of my hair behind my ear. His expression is so open and honest I feel it like a sucker punch. 'I used to pretend, all the time, so I can spot it a mile away. If you're feeling shit, then just say so. I don't need to know the reason, it might be none of my business—'
'I'm feeling shit.”
Ellie Marney, Every Breath

“So what did Conroy say to you this arvo, after I left?'
He said, Rachel Watts is hot stuff, and I'd like to ask her out. Got any tips?'
'Mycroft, don't be juvenile.'
'I am a juvenile.'
'Then don't be grotesque. Are you going to tell me or not?'
Mycroft fiddles with the cigarette pack, loose in his long fingers.
'Nothing to tell,' he says. 'Conroy uses the same material in every speech. The we can't put up with this behaviour forever line, and the one more stunt like this line. I can't figure out why he keeps recycling.'
'Maybe he thinks constant repetition will make it sink in.'
'See, that's Einstein's definition of insanity right there - doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting a different result.”
Ellie Marney, Every Breath

“If you looked inside his brain at this moment you’d see all the little synapses, Catherine wheels and penny bangers and skyrockets, all firing off into space in some sparkling display of gathering momentum. I don’t want to look into his brain. Looking into his eyes is bad enough.”
Ellie Marney, Every Breath

“Emma feels the fear in her chest like a raven tapping at a window. It's too late for misgivings, though. The door is open. A large male orderly stands sentry, securing her passage to the place beyond sanity, and Emma steps inside...”
Ellie Marney, None Shall Sleep

“Mai grins at Mycroft. ‘You know that’s slightly ridiculous, don’t you?’
He smiled. ‘Why?’
‘Because. . . because you’re teenagers.’ Mai’s expression says it should be obvious. ‘Mycroft, this isn’t like figuring out who spray-painted some guy’s car. This is murder.’
‘The principles are the same’ he insists.
‘But you’re both minors. And you have no access to police information, no experience, no forensics lab, no authority. . . ’
‘Mai, are you trying to bring me down or something?’
Gus, who usually only gets emotive about things like soccer, suddenly leans forward. ‘I think you should do it.’ He glances at me and Mycroft in turn. ‘This homeless guy, it’s not like his death is going to be a major priority, is it? The police won’t bend over backwards to bring his killer to justice or anything. He was a derelict with no family. So you two are the only ones who even care.”
Ellie Marney, Every Breath

“If you want me to fix your homework, you need to leave me alone.” Then he spotted her. “You’re back.”
“Yeah.” She glanced between him and Gabriel. “You do his homework?”
“Just the math. It’s a miracle he can count to ten.”
“I can count to one.” Gabriel gave him the finger.”

Hi Lia,
Wow, Romania is far away! My answer to your question is: I'm afraid I don't know! My publisher chooses both models and their sources, so I'm completely in the dark about it. Sorry I can't give you a better answer, but if you're superkeen to find out, you could contact my publishers (Allen & Unwin in Aus, Tundra Books in Canada) and see what they say :) But thanks for writing, and I'm very glad you loved the books - happy reading!
xxEllie

Lia Hi, Ellie! I absolutely love the Every trilogy (I'm currently reading the last installment) and my friend and I have a reoccuring question: who are the models on the covers of the trilogy? It's no problem if you can't say! <3 Lots of love from Romania!
