W. Scott Mitchell came of age during the cultural revolution and movements that dominated the 1960's. It was not until the late 1990's when he began to write fiction. He incorporates an aspect of philosophy and psychology into each of his novels. The subplots are discussed on his website for readers to consider as they review his works. He believes the subplot is the most important part of the work.
Mitchell hopes to attract readers who examine everyday characters as the focus of attention to larger social and personal issues within the subplot.

Without giving away too much, our choices not only impact our personal life, but also impact the world around us in ways that are not always so obvious. I suppose my inspiration to write this book comes from the belief that all of us have a place within the Universal Mind and that none of us exists in isolation.
The title of the novel “Coincidence” (meaning two or more things happening by chance) and “Design” (meaning a planned or prescribed event) should be polar opposites of each other. At the core of this novel is the age old debate of choice (free will) versus predestination (destiny). Most everyone agrees that our path through life is a matter of choice or destiny, but not both. In fact, I think most people consider choice and destiny to be opposites of each other. I make the argument in “Coincidence by Design” that choice and destiny are not opposites, but in reality exist as two forces walking hand in hand where neither force could exist without the other.
