Rita Chaney grew up in Decatur, Illinois in the midst of corn and soybean fields. She is the youngest of six children and has four sisters and one brother. Her siblings kept her busy playing tag, baseball, and hide-and-seek during the summers and having snowball fights in the winters.

Reading books as a youngster was a favorite pastime for Rita. She was especially pleased when her father brought home a stack of comics from the second-hand shop downtown. Rita’s writing skills were first noticed by friends and family when she won second place in a short-story writing contest sponsored by the local newspaper as a sophomore in high school.
