What do the shamans and wise ones have to share—from all times and places?

My first novel, Dance the Dream Awake, emerged from déjà vu experiences that occurred while traveling in Mexico from Teotihuacan to Oaxaca and on to the Yucatan. By the time I reached the Mayan pyramids of Chichen Itza and Coba, I had the seeds of a story. But

Today I'm issuing a warning: HAIKU DANCE is a book for 18+ years old only. Although a sweet and suspenseful love story, it also has sexual content not appropriate for those under 18. Which leads me to shunga. "Shunga" is the traditional Japanese term for erotic paintings and prints. The history of shunga dates back as far as the Heian Period (794-1185) in which my book is set. They were Japan’s fi Read more of this blog post »

“You must learn to see what is real,” Master Kana said. “Forget what your eyes tell you. View the world around you through all your senses. Allow the impression of things to come to you through your whole body, rather than only what reaches your eyes.” One day during the following summer, Shino sat in the garden. His lesson was to wait in stillness until he received the full impression of a bird—the first bird that landed on the tree in front of him. Master Kana had instructed, “Do not give it a name, or attributes—this bird or that color, or define it as beautiful or fast, or that its sound is sweet or sharp. Observe without attaching mind labels.” A bird soon landed on the branch above him. Miyoshi”

“she walked the path along the garden stream, the uguisu birds rustled in the branches. Bush Warbler began an insistent song. She answered it, whistling softly to draw it closer. She smiled when it hopped onto the nearby maple tree, cocking its head toward her.”

“A short story must have a single mood and every sentence must build towards it.”
Edgar Allan Poe

“A short story is a love affair, a novel is a marriage. A short story is a photograph; a novel is a film.”
Lorrie Moore

“Short fiction seems more targeted - hand grenades of ideas, if you will. When they work, they hit, they explode, and you never forget them. Long fiction feels more like atmosphere: it's a lot smokier and less defined.”
Paolo Bacigalupi

“If you can make a woman laugh, you can make her do anything.”
Marilyn Monroe

“Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”
C.G. Jung
