TARNISHED Cover Reveal

I'm so thrilled to finally get to share the cover of TARNISHED with you.

It's moody and ethereal.

Enchanting and beautiful.

And most importantly: ALL MINE!

Drumroll please...

...

Freedom comes at a cost...
Ella was genetically engineered to be the perfect pet—graceful, demure...and kept. In a daring move, she escaped her captivity and took refuge in Canada. But while she can think and act as she pleases, the life of a liberated pet is just as confining as the Congressman’s gilded cage. Her escape started a revolution, but she’s trapped, unable to get back to Penn—the boy she loves—or help the girls who need her.
Back in the United States, pets are turning up dead. With help from a very unexpected source, Ella slips deep into the dangerous black market, posing as a tarnished pet available to buy or sell. If she's lucky, she'll be able to rescue Penn and expose the truth about the breeding program. If she fails, Ella will pay not only with her life, but the lives of everyone she's tried to save...

First Look Friday: Featuring Catherine Stine

Post by Catherine Stine, also writing romance as Kitsy Clare
More and more, I like writing about supernatural elements: witches, modern demons, and all of that good scary stuff. I like to couch my baddies in contemporary settings and fashions that blend in with the everyday. So, for instance, Wilson, the Prince of Darkness in Dorianna, is a tall, charismatic fashion-hound and videographer who lives in Coney Island, NY.
I’m excited to announce my two new projects! One is my YA horror, Dorianna, forthcoming from Evernight Teen on October 24 (written as Catherine Stine). It’s a new twist on A Picture of Dorian Gray for the Internet generation, and here’s the blurb:
Internet followers, beauty, power. It all sounded good. Until it transformed into a terrifying reality Dorianna couldn’t stop
Dorianna is a dark twist for the Internet generation on A Picture of Dorian Gray. When her father is jailed, her mother ships lonely, plain Dorianna to her aunt’s. There, Dorianna yearns to build a new identity, but the popular Lacey bullies her—mostly for getting attention from her ex, Ander.
Ander takes Dorianna to Coney Island where Wilson, a videographer, creates a stunning compilation of her. She dreams of being an online sensation, as she’s never even had a birthday party, and vows she’d give anything to go viral. Wilson claims he’s the Prince of Darkness and warns her the pledge has downsides. Dorianna thinks he’s joking. She has no idea of how dire the consequences might be.
My second, a novel-in-progress is a new adult historical paranormal romance set in 1932 on the Jersey shore (written as Kitsy Clare). It’s called Beach Witch and it’s about a pretty nineteen year-old lady named Fiera, who has no idea she’s a powerful witch, at least at first. I can’t say more about it yet, except you can get big hints by taking a peek at my Beach Witch Pinterest board here: http://www.pinterest.com/kitsy84557/i... you want to keep up with my new launches, Facebook parties, giveaways, sales and book tours, please subscribe to my newsletter.

This photo is a rough design for Beach Witch I created as my screensaver to inspire me to keep writing. I’m not a professional cover designer, but I imagine Fiera a bit like this.
What new projects do you have up your sleeve?

Throwback Thursday: Featuring Sasha Hibbs

I think of all the books I loved growing up and it started much like this:

Things progressed from there. There’s a list in my mind of books that shaped my tastes, my life as a reader and an author. The first time I discovered Charlotte Bronte’s JANE EYRE, I remember thinking, “Where in the world has Mr. Rochester been my entire life?”
The poor brooding dark male leading character….sigh. I was most impressed that this was written at a time when this would’ve been an unlikely scenario in real life, bringing me to my next book: PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. Same case. Of all the reasons to LOVE and adore this gem of a novel that has influenced hundreds of authors, one of the main reasons I love it, is for me, in the time period it was written, this would’ve been a fantasy and in my mind, that makes Pride and Prejudice quite the progressive, ahead-of-its-time kind of novel. Need I point out all the other reasons why we all love it? J
And Gone With the Wind. As a child (things never changed as an adult) I loved all things Southern and when I first read and then watched Gone With the Wind, it felt life changing. I wanted to throttle Scarlett, I wanted to look like Scarlett, and did I ever want a Rhett of my own! I was 12 when the sequel, Scarlett, came out and I begged my mother to get it and get it now! I completed my 7th grade book report on it and I remember this look on my teacher’s face when I handed it in that said, “Are you serious?” at which point my goofy glasses-wearing self said, “Frankly my dear, I am serious. I am damn serious.” With a sharply raised eyebrow, she gave me an A.

Now as an adult, I still hold these books dear. I don’t know that any of my own characters, or myself, are anything like any of the leading casts. My novels are quite a bit different than the above masterpieces. But my hope from reading these, was that in some way, somewhere out there, I could make a reader feel the way about my books as the literary gems above me made me feel the first time I read them.      An author can only hope….
About the author:

By age 5, Sasha Hibbs' favorite movie was Gone With the Wind. By age 12, she completed her 7th grade book report on the sequel, Scarlett. By 18, she met and married her very own Mr. Rhett Butler and as it turns out, she never had to worry about going back to Tara to win the love of her life back. Fortunately, he stuck with her. With a love of all things paranormal, the ambiance of the South with its gigantic antebellum mansions and canopies of Spanish moss, and a love for her husband’s rich storytelling of blacksmiths and the mythology surrounding their origins, it wasn’t long until the world of her debut novel, Black Amaranth, was born. When not working her day job as a nurse, you can find Sasha dreaming of her next beach trip, reading the latest YA novel, and drinking more white chocolate mocha than she should.Sasha lives in mountainous West Virginia with her husband, Tim, and their two daughters, Aeliza and Ava. She is currently hard at work on book three in The Vulcan Legacies series.

Woman Crush Wednesday: Featuring Lisa Brown Roberts

Introducing Darcy Covington, heroine of HOW TO DROP A CLASS (AND FALL IN LOVE) by Lisa Brown RobertsThanks for stopping by, Darcy. After interviewing Lucas Martinez earlier this week, I wasn’t sure if you’d show.
Yeah…Lucas didn’t want me to come. But I thought I should.
So he’s the protective boyfriend type? Your knight in shining armor?
He’s not...we’re not…(takes a deep breath). He’s a friend. One of my only friends right now. We’re not, um, a couple.
You sure about that?
Look, I didn’t come here to talk about my love life.
So what do you want to talk about?
The truth. I’m sick of reporters making stuff up and spreading lies.
And what truth is that, Darcy?
About my dad. Everyone thinks he totally abandoned his company, and his family. Those stupid internet trolls are accusing him of embezzling a ton of money and fleeing the country. But he didn’t. I know he didn’t…
Where is he, Darcy? Have you talked to him?
(Long silence)
Darcy? A lot of people are looking for your dad. If you know where he is—
I don’t know where he is! But I know what kind of person he is. He’d never steal. And he wouldn’t just abandon my mom and me without a good reason. He’s coming back. I know he is.
David Letterman doesn’t think so. Did you see his Top 10 list of reasons why your dad bailed?
(Jumps up, knocking over chair.) Oh my God. Lucas was right! I never should’ve come here. You’re just going to spread lies about my dad like all the other reporters.
Darcy, wait, don’t storm off.
(Door slams.)
I can’t believe this. That’s the second time this week I’ve had a door slammed in my face.

HOW TO DROP A CLASS (AND FALL IN LOVE) by Lisa Brown Roberts releases in February 2015 from Entangled Teen.

Darcy Covington is completely unprepared when her car is repossessed from her elite private school and her new nickname, Repo Girl, goes viral. Used to hiding in the shadows of her larger-than-life infomercial king dad and drama queen best friend, Darcy’s forced into the spotlight when her dad goes AWOL. Can Darcy make a new life for herself and her family on the run-down side of town, decipher the cryptic clues to find her missing dad, and even fall in love along the way?

Transformation Tuesday: Featuring Tiffany Truit

I would like to start off by thanking Kate for hosting me…again.
Now, let’s get to Transformation Tuesday.
As a writer, signing that first deal can be a daunting, herculean task…but if you think your work is done once there, you are utterly mistaken. Sure, there are those writers who strike it rich with their debut novel, publishers begging and fighting for their next work, but for most authors that’s not the case. It’s a long journey to that bestseller list. And I learned that writing and publishing The Language of Silence. I didn’t have an agent when I signed my fist deal for my dystopian series, The Lost Souls (Chosen Ones, Naturals, and Creators). I took a chance on a small publisher, and that small publisher took a chance on me. With my series coming to a close and after acquiring an agent, I decided to go on the dreaded submission with my new YA Contemporary. It was a roller coaster of emotions. My agent and I were pretty lucky. We got full requests from pretty much every major publisher we contacted. But over and over again we got turned down: the book is too dark, the voice is too different, we already have something like this on our list. And so we decided to pull it and go back to the drawing board. I was pretty heartbroken because I LOVED this story. Sure, it was all the things the editors said: dark and different. But I felt like it was a story that needed to be told. After sitting on it for awhile, I decided to return to the world of the small publisher. Sure, you won’t get that huge signing bonus. And it will require a lot of promotional work on your part….but there is a freedom that comes with working with smaller publishing houses. They allow you to really own your work, respecting your voice and your choices. And by doing this, you really get to know yourself as an author and really perfect your skill, discovering the stories you want to tell. So, I could have let The Language of Silence fade away, but it meant too much to me as a writer. It may not be perfect, but it’s the story I decided to tell at this time in my career. I won’t make millions off of it, but I am damn proud of it, and I’d take every risk to stay true to my craft.
Excerpt from The Language of Silence:
“How’d your mom tell you?” Brett offers a short, bitter laugh in response. I scratch my chin and shake my head. “That good, eh?”
“You would think she was auditioning for a Lifetime movie or something.”
For some reason, I laugh. Brett smiles. An actual smile. The kind of smile that transforms a face. If she was beautiful before, she’s luminescent now. These sorts of moments are so rare, so precious, I feel both a need to forever stay in this place and flee it as soon as possible.
I’ve always had a crush on Brett Jensen. I’ve just been smart enough to know that I’m too messed up to ever be with her. And now, with Tristan gone, I’m pretty sure I’m damn near done. Ruined. And maybe that’s what I deserve for not convincing him to stay with us.
“Maybe she thinks Julia Roberts will play her,” she continues, pulling at the grass growing up between the cement base of the bridge. “I mean, this has movie written all over it. All-American boy dies under mysterious conditions.”
Oh, Brett. There is no mystery about it. He left us.
“More likely some has-been from one of those medical shows,” I say instead.
Brett nods. Suddenly, her hand is on mine. I feel the tension she is holding within herself by the pressure she exerts onto my skin. My cheeks burn, and I am ashamed by my body’s quick reaction to this small movement.
“You can be whatever you want now, Ed,” she whispers.
I try to pull my hand from her grasp, but she merely holds on tighter. “What are you talking about?” I manage.
“You have a get out of jail free card thanks to Tristan. You could skip school for a week or flunk the whole year, and no one could say anything. You are…were the best friend of the dead kid. Who would give you grief? You could become anyone.”
She’s holding on so tightly to my hand that I begin to lose feeling. I let her words sink in. Settle. And the funny thing is—they make sense. Perfect sense. I know how I am going to deal with all of this.

Man Crush Monday: Featuring Tiffany Truitt

I would like to start off by thanking Kate for hosting me today! I am so excited she agreed to be a part of the YA Reader Week Blog Hop J
Now, let’s get to the Man Crush Monday.
In my YA Contemporary novel, The Language of Silence, I strived to portray a realistic story of young love. While it’s been a little over a decade since my teenage years, I still remember it being tempestuous, wild, and not always pretty.
There are basic elements of the iconic love story that I have attempted to pay homage to within the pages of my story, but, because I’m me, I tried to give the age old boy meets girl, boy looses girl, boy gets girl back trope a modern kick in the ass. And I thought there would be no better way to introduce my novel’s leading male, Ed, than by showing these staples of the love story genre through his eyes.
The Meet Cute: Typically, the meeting of the two lovers is done in some highly convenient but seemingly random aligning of the stars way. But in The Language of Silence, my couple already knows each other. Using the famous, “I have a crush on my best friend’s sister,” element, I added my own twist. Brett and Ed, while always attracted to each other in an almost ungovernable way, are brought together when Brett’s brother, Tristan, dies under mysterious circumstances. With Tristan no longer there to keep them apart combined with the magnetic pull of their own grief, they are doomed to collide.
Excerpt (Or in Ed’s Words…)I can’t help it. I have to see her. It’s not something I can control. My meltdown in the car has left me exposed, and I’m pretty sure that even though it will kill me in the end, seeing her is the only thing that will make the pain go away. Temporarily. She sits across from me as the preacher goes on and on and on about eternal salvation or maybe damnation. Who knows? It all sounds the same to me.  Brett. She’s the only safe place for me right now.  I’m not good for her, and if I ever destroyed her, which I would if I ever really sought her out, I’d want to join Tristan six feet under. So, basically, I’m fucked.
The First Kiss: The first time a literary couple kisses is usually filled with fireworks, shooting stars, and gentle, sweet caresses. Mine involves trash, a shower, and a bit of cursing.
Excerpt(Or in Ed’s Words…): “No. You stand up. Take a shower, and then I am taking you home.” I meant to sound in control, but my voice is choked with emotion. I don’t know what’s happening to me. Before I know it, I’m in the shower too. I’m on my knees in front of her. The water is rushing down my back and spraying onto her. She looks up at me, and I feel like my blood is rushing so fast through my veins that I must be dying. We’re both breathing heavily now. I can see the water rushing in and dribbling out of her mouth.God, she is beautiful.I want to kiss her so badly it’s physically painful.
The Happily Ever After: It is no surprise that a good deal of YA novels spend the majority of the story getting the characters together…but I’ve always wanted to know what happens after. In my opinion, the getting together is the easy part; it’s what comes after where the real fun begins.
Excerpt(Or in Ed’s Words…):This feeling that musicians and poets write about. I just never thought a schmuck like me would ever feel it. I feel the enormity of my mistakes. I see the truth in her words. I gave myself away to all the wrong people. I didn’t have to give anything away to Brett. With her, it didn’t feel forced or wrong. When she comes out of the bathroom, I want to kiss her. I want to ask her to come with me. Instead, I simply tell her I love her. She nods. “I know.”
I hope with the use of Ed’s words that you are intrigued by my little imperfect perfection, Ed, and you’ll pick up a copy of The Language of Silence today!

Barnes & Noble Signing

You know that anxiety that you used to get at a junior high dance while you stood on the edge of the school basketball court (which never really lost the smell of sweaty pubescent boys) and stared out over the sea of bodies moving awkwardly to the Electric Slide, already worried that the song would come to an end and the NEXT song would probably be something slow, like Forever Young, and probably no boy would ask you to dance and you'd have to stand there smiling like it didn't really matter even though it was eating you up inside?

What? That never happened to you? Well, it happened to me and I have the same sort of anxiety that no one will show up to my book signing this Saturday at Barnes & Noble.

So I'm just going to go ahead and beg. Please. Pretty-please-with-sugar-and-sprinkles-on-top will you stop by the Sugarhouse Barnes & Noble on September 13th between 1-4 and come talk to me? You don't have to have me sign anything. You don't have to buy anything. Just don't leave me standing alone on the edge of the dance floor, ok?

Saturday, September 13  1:00 - 4:00

Your Name in Lights (or in a book at least)

It's been a little more than a month since PERFECTED was published and it's been such a thrill reading reviews, getting lovely messages from readers, and hearing people lamenting the fact that book two isn't out yet (yes, I realize that it's cruel for me to derive pleasure from your pain, but... oh well).

Speaking of book two... how would you like to be in it?

Wait...Wait... Hold up. Stop right there, Kate.

How is this even possible?

You can't just go springing a question like this on us. We need more information.

You mean, do we want to become fictional characters? Do we want to live between the pages of a book? Do we want the chance at immortality!!!!???!!!!

*maniacal cackle*

Of COURSE we want to be in your book, Kate, duh!

Well, you might not actually BE in my book. I guess I got a little ahead of myself there. What I meant was, how would you like to have a character in my book named after you?

I'm feeling the itch for a contest and I thought, what cooler thing could I give away than naming one of the characters in book two after YOU (or if you hate your name, you could always choose to name it after someone you adore)?

To enter, fill out the Rafflecopter form below (and get ready to tell your friends that you've just found a way to outwit death!)
