The Stage: A Phoenix Rising Novel
He’s covered in tattoos. His whole chest, upper arms, his six-pack. Mostly colorful symbols and tribal art. Everywhere except over his heart. There it’s empty and sad looking. My hand is drawn to the empty spot. When I touch him, his eyes close and he leans into my hand. “Why’s it empty?”“Because nothing belongs there.” And it’s then that I know. I want to belong there. I do.

Me, little
I wanted to share my birthday present. I'm 38 now. My birthday was in February. This Sunday, while the rest of the world was watching the Oscars, my brother and sister-in-law met my family and me for dinner and he presented me with this:
It's a picture he took of me in 1980. I was three-years old. I actually remember him taking it. We'd driven out to see the five-acres my parents had just bought in Wasilla, Alaska. I was running around in my coat and hat and I'd just run on top of a small hil...

Open Letter to Sac City Regarding McKinley Park
To Whom It May Concern,
On Saturday, February 22nd at around 1:00 pm my friend and I had our children playing at the park. Because it was so busy, she suggested we go over to the basketball courts and let the kids play a little before we left. We waited for a few minutes and then the game that was being played seemed to be over and a new game started on the half-court, leaving the other side open. There were a few other children, as well as our four children that began to play and shoot hoops....

The "WHY" in Writing
I heard today that successful companies and successful people make the most impact in their chosen line of work when they get in touch with the ‘why’ portion of what they do. Why do you work where you do? Hopefully, not just to make money or not just to yield whatever it is your company produces. Those things are the results of the ‘how’, the ‘what’, and, yes, the ‘why’ of what we do every day.
That got me thinking, why do I write? Considering that until the summer of 2013, I’d never made a...
