The Bird of the Year has just been announced and this year'swinner is the kārearea falcon. It is New Zealand's only falcon, capable ofspeeds up to 200km/h.

(The Bird of the Year contest has been running for twentyyears and was started by Forest & Bird NZ to raiseawareness of the conservation threats to many endangered native birds.)
