When I sit down to write and nothing feels good coming out, I just force myself to write anyway. Even if what I'm putting out feels ridiculous. I figure when I go back through my book during the editing stage I can pull out the parts that weren't working or sound ugly and fix them later. But just writing, regardless of the quality, is what is important. Any many times when I go back to edit, I can't even find those "bad parts". Turns out they weren't really all that "bad". I just wasn't in the mood to write and that mood affected how I was seeing my words. Just pushing through and getting the words down helps tremendously. And have faith in your own ability to edit and get rid of the bad parts later. It will liberate you.

And get rid of distractions. When I am writing the first draft of my manuscript I do it on a tablet computer with a bluetooth keyboard. I do that as it is harder for me to distract myself if I know I have to physically switch programs in order to check email or the internet. It helps keep me focused. If I could write using a barebones laptop with no internet I would. Fewer distractions equals more time writing.

Oh, and Hemingway had a great quote: Write drunk, edit sober. While I don't condone writing while intoxicated, the idea is sound. When you write don't worry about where the story is going or spend time over-thinking the plot. If you are inebriated, you can't focus well so you just type and flow. That is great. And later you can go back and fix the mistakes in editing. At that point you should have a level head and be able to make the story connections without distraction. In other words, be liberal and free when creating, but be focused and conservative when editing. I use that concept all the time.(less)

It is just fun being able to create a world out of nothing and then have other people come live in your world for a little bit. There is a lot of power in that.(less)
