As an artist, the idea of being a writer, and the longevity a good writer could have, appealed to Jason. He started writing poetry and what is now called flash fiction. In the beginning, he was drawn to writers like Charles Bukowski and Anne Sexon, not only for their style, but the content of their work. They spoke a language from a world he knew all too well. Jason's life had been intertwined with colorful characters who lived with little worry of seeing the next day. Growing up among the working class South also influenced much of his work. It's a hard world he came from, where you may hug a friend or family member one day and the next help ca ...more

“When I drove home, I burned myself just to feel something. I’m just so lost right now, and I feel like I’m being hit with wave after wave of sadness. It feels like a struggle to even think about tomorrow.”
Jason E. Hodges, The Drop Off

“Humans have the ability to rewrite history. Within a few decades it is not even questioned. Stories of the past become as real as the world you walk through today. Wars are waged over false history. Sins are denied. All for mankind to move forward and feel comfortable about its past. Your true history is written in the stars. Look up, breathe in, and be humbled by the ones who came before you. The ones who have suffered, who have endured, who have overcome. Their blood is alive in you. Their spirits roam freely in the heavens above.”
Jason E. Hodges, When The Cedars Shade Your Grave

“Becoming a writer does not mean words will suddenly flow with perfection from your pen. It takes hard work, rejection, and the willingness to lay everything inside you out for the world to see.”
Jason E. Hodges

“Sweat, blood, and tears mean nothing in your writing if you’re not willing to burn what doesn’t work.”
Jason E. Hodges

“If you’re not going to immerse yourself in your work as a writer then don’t write. But beware, if you’re a writer who does not write, you stand a good chance of drowning in the world that surrounds you.”
Jason E. Hodges

“For some folks the world is filled to the top with hurt.”
Jason E. Hodges, The Mailbox

“Lies are served like a fine delicacy. But beware, the truth of it all will sour, lodge in your throat, and choke your very existence if you continue to believe them.”
Jason E. Hodges

“Literature is a love that won’t let you down or show its true colors after some time goes by. You know what it’s about from the moment you read it. In a lot of ways it’s a perfect love.”
