Author Fair Noosa Sat 11/6/2016

It’s Queensland Week - and the fabulous Noosa Region Libraries are showcasing Queensland writers with their great program “Behind Queensland’s Words”. Next Saturday 11 June I’ll be joining other authors at the Author Fair, Noosaville Library, 7 Wallace Street, Noosaville from 1 to 4 pm. Come along to meet us all and have a yarn. It’s a great chance to hear Queensland authors talk about their work, the issues and places that motivate them, and the inspiration they draw from this great state of ours. Look forward to seeing you there – and thanks again to Noosa Libraries!

Real Life Political Battles – Queensland Style.

For all those interested in heads of power in Australia, I thought I would share a little something that might be of interest. What happens when there is a clash between a state premier and a state governor? Here is a tale set in the turbulent era of 1980s Queensland politics, and it really happened. In 1987, the Sunshine State had its own constitutional crisis when Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen, who had been in office for 19 years, refused to resign after losing the support of his party.

It was certainly a rough and tumble time and now you can read the whole story online at the Bond University Law School site. In the Owen Dixon Society ejournal, one of the Bond University Law School publications, you can find three painstakingly researched articles on the career of Sir Walter Campbell, a brilliant barrister, Chief Justice and later State Governor. Sir Walter, a World War 2 flying ace, was the right man at the right time to cope with the political fall-out of a Premier without the numbers and he safely steered the good ship Queensland back into calm waters.

The three articles were co-written by Professor Jim Corkery of Bond University and myself and were based on extensive research across a range of sources, including Sir Walter’s private papers. Find them now at http://epublications.bond.edu.au/cgi/...
