I started out innocently enough as a painter/paperhanger in my hometown of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and little by little got pulled into the romance and history of wallpaper — one of the most prolific and enjoyable decorative materials ever invented. After a long career working with wallpaper in historic homes (including Andrew Jackson's Hermitage, Martin Van Buren's Lindenwald, Washington Place in Hawaii and the Governor's Mansion in the Virgin Islands), I was pooped. Now I write when I'm not listening to my cats snore. My first full-length book is the Backstory of Wallpaper, published on September 12, 2013.

All of that needs to be read, re-re…moreI work with history, so, this is non-fiction, which depends greatly on having a grasp of the secondary literature. All of that needs to be read, re-read, and scoured for clues. The search for fresh information and for a fresh perspective will occasionally unearth an entirely new source…perhaps a diary, or a set of newspaper ads. As a consequence, I can honestly say that I never have to worry about writer's block! There is always too much to do. If I get stuck in one particular direction, I can always switch to another. Then there is the huge matter of marketing, which is so necessary, and for research in that direction. Trust me, there is always a way to fill my time!(less)
