Take the opportunities you can to write for a community newsletter you are part of, a newspaper as a volunteer or for little pay. Rub shoulders with writers and editors and be willing to go the extra mile. Editors *love* writers who keep deadlines and "can deliver" what is asked of them. Remember this: follow directions. Never, never submit something to a magazine or book publisher without thoroughly reading the writer's guidelines and following them to the letter. The best way to get a rejection is to give the editor an excuse to reject it because you didn't follow the straightforward instructions.(less)

The big difference between "a project in the works" and "a project on deadline" is the deadline is because a publisher wants it, there's a contract signed, and there's money being exchanged. So that deadline, contract, money (however small or large) is a big motivation to move forward on a project. I recommend you sign on to projects for whatever amount, so you keep writing and have exterior (money, deadlines, for others voluntary, etc.) as well as interior (artistic, humanitarian, religious etc.) motivations for writing.(less)

Overcoming Loneliness: The Bruderhof Community Experience

We've been hearing that community is declining and people are lonely. There are certainly people who are isolated and lack friendship, community, support, love. Since we already know this is a human problem and won't argue with that premise, what can be done to seek out community, whether loneliness and isolation is a national trend or not? Over the years I have been blessed to enjoy a number of t Read more of this blog post »

I am a Cone-influenced white theologian and he's right, I've never seen this but have hopes for my son.
A Black Theology of Liberation by James H. Cone
“No white theologian has ever taken the oppression of blacks as a point of departure for analyzing God’s activity in contemporary America.”

Frederick Buechner
“Stop trying to protect, to rescue, to judge, to manage the lives around you . . . remember that the lives of others are not your business. They are their business. They are God’s business . . . even your own life is not your business. It also is God’s business. Leave it to God. It is an astonishing thought. It can become a life-transforming thought . . . unclench the fists of your spirit and take it easy . . . What deadens us most to God’s presence within us, I think, is the inner dialogue that we are continuously engaged in with ourselves, the endless chatter of human thought. I suspect that there is nothing more crucial to true spiritual comfort . . . than being able from time to time to stop that chatter . . . ”
Frederick Buechner, Telling Secrets

Søren Kierkegaard
“The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand, we are obliged to act accordingly.”
Soren Kierkegaard, Provocations: Spiritual Writings of Kierkegaard
