“Sarah knew she had gone too far. “Don’t be angry Dad. I don’t want you to be less Russian.
And I don't want you to be less Jewish. But it would be good if you could be maybe just a bit
more Australian.”
Tony Jaques, The Man in the Photograph

“Fehlhauer moves closer, his breath just inches away. “When the numbers don't add up, you are cheating the Reich. Stealing from the war effort. Do you understand? That is sabotage.”
With a practised ease, Fehlhauer draws his pistol and smashes it across the man’s face. He falls to his knees, bleeding from his nose and mouth, wordlessly pleading for mercy. As he struggles to get to his feet, the black-clad officer places his pistol against the back of the
man’s head and calmly squeezes the trigger.
While the other prisoners have often seen death in the camp, it is seldom so brutal and so casual. Now they look at the man dead on the floor and each of them thinks: Could I be next?
Please God, don’t let it be. One younger man stands there and can’t stop hot tears coursing down his cheeks.”
Tony Jaques, The Man in the Photograph

“Through the magnifying glass, he examined the faces in the group photo, finally focusing on a tall man standing in the second row, almost obscured by those in front. Ravitz moved the table lamp for an even better view, his mouth hard and muttering under his breath.
He looked at the photograph again and memories of the war flooded into his mind. “I know you,” he whispered to himself, and gave a grunt of satisfaction. Then he took his hat and coat from behind the door, folded up the newspaper, and stuffed it into his coat pocket as he headed out into the small reception.”
