C.W. Grody (1961-happily still present) grew up in Fairborn, Ohio, which mostly consists of an Air Force base with really big planes, car lots with dealers who have delusions of entertainment greatness, and fast-food restaurants that sometimes sell real food. His new book, SINCE BEFORE YOU WERE BORN, is inspired by his childhood, and Grody says the book is supposed to be funny (which we hope isn't another Fairborn delusion).

Grody's day job is as a licensed independent social worker in Worthington, Ohio, where he specializes in family therapy. (That might be a shocker to those of you who read his new book; let's just say many of those experiences inspired his move into working with families.)

It might sound like I'm dodging the question, but I don't really believe in writer's block. The mind is always creating and reorganzing your work, even when you feel like you couldn't dig a word out of it with a pickaxe. Where writers get in trouble is by labeling it as writer's block and then accepting that it's in the way. We believe the stories that we tell ourselves, and then we act in ways that validate that story. Suddenly, the words won't come, and we're stymied.

If you feel blocked, try looking at it from a different frame. Look at it as time for your brain to continue developing an idea, which can only be good for your writing. Do somethng else to distract you from writing for awhile; Agatha Christie used to wash dishes while her mind worked out a problem. Take a walk, read a book, have a conversation with someone, work on a different project -- pretty much do anything but sit there staring at the screen shaming yourself for having "writer's block."

Spiders on a Shingle

Spiders are our friends. They eat other insects. They were good guys in Charlotte’s Web. But that doesn’t mean I want to live with them, especially when they’re poisonous and breeding faster than Amish rabbits.

I moved into a duplex sight unseen when I arrived in Columbus during the winter of 2000. Everything was fine for six months. But in early July, I came home to find our duplex deserted and a Read more of this blog post »
