Geek, bookworm, author - batteries not included.

I was first published as part of the collaborative force behind YA Mystery "St Mallory's Forever!" in 2013, and also hold prizes for a variety of multinational short story and poetry competitions from 2006 to this day.

I graduated from the University of Exeter with a BA in English in 2016, and am now attempting to navigate the wide waters of the real world while grappling with a vast army of unfinished speculative fiction manuscripts, all clamouring to find their way onto the printed page.

When they do, you will be the first to know!

Charley Robson is on page 230 of 484 of Queen James: Oof, the chapter on the royal progress(es) was a bit of a slog... but I'm pretty sure it's about to get into the juicy stuff, so I'll forgive it.

Full confession: I did not finish this book. But, dear people of the internet, I tried. I swear on my life, my limbs, and what remains of my despairing sanity, I tried.

I'm sure the story is every bit as wonderful as the blurb promises. What little I

This is empirically a very good and interesting book - the writing style is unique, evocative, and luscious.

However, it is simply not working for me. So I am going to put it down, for now. I may return to it another time, but thus far, the incredible

DNF'ing at around 150 pages.

Fascinating subject matter, and a perspective I had not encountered before (i.e. a pro-Louis one, as it tends to be Marie Antoinette who gets the more sympathetic readings of the royal pair) - but I struggled enormously wi

Interesting material, but I just could not get on with the writing style; too meandering, too repetitious. I couldn't hold onto the point made at the start of the page by the time I'd reached the end of it.

Compulsively readable, comprehensive, and refreshingly honest! I really enjoy Hanley's approachable prose and touches of humour, and the almost Pratchettian use of footnotes allows for the rounding out of otherwise niggling or annoying details withou ...more

Jodi Taylor
“I avoided Thomas Hardy because everyone should, and anyway, I was depressed enough.”
Jodi Taylor, A Trail Through Time

Scott Lynch
“If only this city’s entire population of lurking assholes shared one set of balls, so I could kick it repeatedly.”
Scott Lynch, Red Seas Under Red Skies

Robin Hobb
“Once I got away from him, I was smart enough to stay away from him. To hunt that one is as wise as to go hunting a porcupine.

I cannot leave this alone, Nighteyes.

I understand. I am the same about porcupines.”
Robin Hobb, Assassin's Quest

George R.R. Martin
“He'll be down with the books. My old septon used to say books are dead men talking. Dead men should keep quiet is what I say. No one wants to hear a dead man's yabber.”
George R.R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons

George R.R. Martin
“I think there are two types of writers, the architects and the gardeners. The architects plan everything ahead of time, like an architect building a house. They know how many rooms are going to be in the house, what kind of roof they're going to have, where the wires are going to run, what kind of plumbing there's going to be. They have the whole thing designed and blueprinted out before they even nail the first board up. The gardeners dig a hole, drop in a seed and water it. They kind of know what seed it is, they know if planted a fantasy seed or mystery seed or whatever. But as the plant comes up and they water it, they don't know how many branches it's going to have, they find out as it grows. And I'm much more a gardener than an architect.”
