Like Urby Brown, the hero of his first novel Rage in Paris, Kirby Williams sought refuge in France from the racial turmoil of the United States and many of his real-life experiences inform the events of the novel. Williams has lived in Paris since 1962, where he worked in the Secretariat of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) from 1967 to 2000 with diplomatic status.
