| Strangely enough, this story kind of reminded me of The Hulk, where the mild-mannered scientist would revert into the huge, super-muscled hero when he became angry. Except Flare Up’s plot centres around what happens at a local, innocuous gym to a tee ...more | |

“You were once a proud, prosperous people. The Morning Star smiled on all the works of your hands. Everything you did prospered. Now you and your families starve. These are the hard, bare facts—the truth! When will you stand in unity and fight for what belongs to you? We can defeat this tyrant if we work together.”

“It was curious how like a tree she looked, lying motionless in the hull. How slender and delicate and twig-like her long fingers were, how lissom her long arms and legs, like the branches of a young tree. How luxuriant and green her long hair as it curled around her face and shoulders. Her skin, if skin it was, appeared smooth and unwrinkled, unmarred by the cares and worries that beset them. Her gown melded to her lithe body like a second skin. It was odd he could not tell where her legs began and the gown ended; both melded seamlessly. What he couldn’t help but notice was that she was very beautiful, a delicate, fragile creature who needed help. Wonder what your name is?

“Not only was the Black Spot something you found on your undies after a thunder clap, it was also a dire warning that something bad would happen to the person it was given to.”

“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”

“Then something Tookish woke up inside him, and he wished to go and see the great mountains, and hear the pine-trees and the waterfalls, and explore the caves, and wear a sword instead of a walking-stick.”

“Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can function regardless of the temperature of the heart.”

“Or rather, it made him into two people. He was by nature a cheerful almost irrepressible person with a great zest for life. He loved good talk and physical activity. He had a deep sense of humour and a great capacity for making friends. But from now onwards there was to be a second side, more private but predominant in his diaries and letters. This side of him was capable of bouts of profound despair. More precisely, and more closely related to his mother's death, when he was in this mood he had a deep sense of impending loss. Nothing was safe. Nothing would last. No battle would be won for ever.”

“You call a star a star, and say it is just a ball of matter moving on a mathematical course. But that is merely how you see it. By so naming things and describing them you are only inventing your own terms about them. And just as speech is invention about objects and ideas, so myth is invention about truth.”

I've been reading a really great book God's Panoply that I can only describe as refreshing. Its loaded with interesting information. I enjoyed the way Anne weaves popular movies such as the Narnia Chronicles into her writing to show their relevance in her themes. She has done extensive research that covers obscure people groups and aspects of their culture that few would know anything about. Loved discovering all the treasures in her book.
