The problem with praise

Erotica has one really big advantage over every other form of writing. Whilst you can love a thriller, or be under whelmed by the latest Booker prize winner, it’s all somewhat relative. It’s all experiential, and it can be very difficult to analyse and assess that. Yes it made me want to set fire to things, but then again I did finish it.

It’s not really a pass/fail thing.

Unless you’re talking about erotica.

I once heard a description of the wonderful Anaïs Nin’s work as “good, but not quite wankable.” And that’s where the gauntlet lands: is the stuff that has been written – plot and character and prose aside – wankable?

I’ve read things that, really, truly aren’t. Short stories where, when it comes to the crucial scenes, the writer seems to have written it with their eyes closed and tried to get it over and done with as quickly as possible. I mean, isn’t that what real life sex is for?

Allegedly.

By the same token I’ve read pieces where I never get to the end, no matter how many attempts I’ve made. There are books in my collection that I’ve pored over dozens of times but would be unable to even guess what happened after the first few chapters.

It’s important stuff, and for the discerning erotica reader it’s the difference between what feels like a waste of time, and something to be kept and cherished for years to come.

But nobody talks about it.

There’s no section on Newsnight Review for erotica, no special column in the Metro dedicated to this weeks best short erotic releases.

Why?

Why, when it’s the qualifying factor in a story is it so difficult to say? Why is it so difficult to even admit that we masturbate to written words?

I mean, by most measures the person who masturbates to erotica should be held in higher regard than the ones who just look at X-Videos right? It’s ethically sourced, fair trade, and usually your money goes to struggling individuals trying to make a living. I can read erotica and take the moral high ground… roughly… from behind…

I think part of the problem comes from the fact that we’re too polite as a society. Many people (myself included) go for the principle that you shouldn’t say something behind someone’s back that you wouldn’t say to their face.

And therein lies the problem.

You see whilst I could walk up to Dan Brown and tell him his books are clichéd pulp of the lowest order, if I walked up to someone who writes erotica and tell them I’ve wanked over something they’ve written it’s at best a little creepy, at worst sexually aggressive.

Which is a shame because there are some brilliant writers out there who I wish I could tell, in the best and most positive way possible, I love your writing, it’s really wankable.

Today’s guest blog post is by Cindy Johnson, here to discuss writing new kinks – that is, kinks which are new to you. Or you could invent new kinks entirely – don’t let me stop you!

Writing New Kinks
Write What You know?

We’ve all heard the same adage when it comes to writing erotica: “Write what you know. Are you into BBWs and Billionaires? Write that. Are you into diapers and age play? Write that. Write about whatever turns you on and you are bound to create something sexy for your readers as well.” For the most part, it is good advice. Writing what you know gives you a solid foundation to start on, which is especially great in the beginning when many writers still feel shy or unsure of their talents.

But, writing only about what you know can also cause stagnation, both personally and professionally. You may know a kink inside and out, but where is the fun in re-writing old ground all the time? It isn’t helping you grow as a writer, or as a sexual being. And frankly, readers tend to grow and evolve, so they may leave you behind as they discover new delights.

I’m not saying to never write stories about kinks you already know and love; far from it. But I do think as a writer it can be very rewarding to explore new kinks, and to expand one’s abilities by venturing into the unknown. J. K. Rowling wasn’t a wizard, but that didn’t stop her! And you are probably not a wizard either, but you can still write hot witch shape-shifter erotica.

How to Write New Kinks

We’ll break this down into easy steps.

1. Respect the Kink – This should really go without saying, but a reminder never hurt anyone. You need to respect the kink and its fans. If you find yourself smugly thinking, ”who would ever be into this,” then you need to step back and re-evaluate. If you judge before you begin, you are going to have a shitty time. Leave your judgements behind as you commit to exploring a new avenue.

2.Research, research, research – This is the fun part! Get your greedy little hands on some stories from established authors, and check out some hot videos for ‘educational purposes.’ These business expenses might even be tax deductible! Anyway, research your heart out and see all the ways the kink has been used before. It’ll help your understanding of what makes a particular kink sexy, and how that has been used in the past to make a compelling story. Pay particular attention to the power dynamics between the characters in erotica, which can often help you understand the allure of a kink.

3.Overlap – After doing your research, think of ways you can overlap your current kinks with the new one. No need to jump right into the deep end, so we’ll work it in slowly (he he), adding some new spice to your current work in progress. For example, let’s say you want to explore mind control. If you normally write billionaire stories, add some fun mind control elements to his mega media cooperation. By starting slow and adding new kinks to your familiar ground you are building up your understanding of how to effectively use new plot devices.

4. Be Mindful of Growth – While writing a new kink you can explore sides of your own self that you may have not considered before, and its important to remain mindful of the ways in which you are changing as a writer. Maybe after writing some hot BDSM scenes you realize you have a dominant streak hiding within. Or maybe after writing a sexy piece of dinosaur erotica you realize that you haven’t felt this creative in a long time. Or maybe you don’t personally feel anything one way or another, but you do understand why certain kinks turn other people on. Any way you look at it, your understanding of sexuality is growing and your skills as an author are improving so keep mindful of your progress.

5. Don’t Force It – This might seem like I’m going against everything I just said, but there is no shame in quitting if its just not going to happen. Give yourself a safe word when you are writing, and know when the spark just isn’t there. The idea isn’t to force yourself to do something truly unpleasant; it is to try something new and to stretch your sexuality in fun new directions. If you find yourself deeply uncomfortable with a subject, it’s OK to stop and think of a new topic!

Let the Journey Begin!

Hopefully this will give you some motivation to try something new today. Explore some sexy new kinks and let you mind go wild. It’ll bring some spark into your writing (and perhaps into your bedroom as well). Trying new kinks will spice up your writing, prevent your imagination from becoming lazy, and give you readers a new thrill. Happy Smutting!

What is SEO?

SEO is short for “search engine optimization.” This is the process of ensuring your websites, articles, or in our case, books, can be found easily through searches. The higher you rank in results, the more traffic you generate. The more traffic you generate, the better the sales you make. SEO is typically calculated through a complex algorithm that takes into account the quality of your content, your keywords, back links, and more. In the case of Amazon, however, we’re going to focus solely on keywords.

Keyword Density

If you’ve spent any time on the web, you’ve probably seen the websites that seem to use a phrase such as “discount tires for Mercedes” in way too many sentences that don’t make sense. This is called ‘keyword stuffing,’ and it’s bad. Let me repeat that: don’t do it. Google will penalize you for it.

Your books can and will appear in Google’s searches. More importantly, they’ll appear in Amazon’s. You know that keyword field? Find one or two of those and use them a few times within your blurb. The more they appear, the higher you will appear in the ranking. There is a limit to how much you should use them, though. The proper density should be around 1 or 2 percent, or once or twice per every 100 words.

Take note: Amazon’s searches are also determined by sales rank. A title with a lot of sales will appear over your book with only one sale, no matter how great your keyword optimization is.

Titles

One of the most common bits of advice given to new authors is to use parentheticals. These are useful for two reasons: one, they tell the reader what to expect out of the title. Two, titles give you stronger pull in searches. Titles that have parentheticals sell better than those without, period, at least when it comes to erotica. (Amazon has that little warning about not including extraneous words, but I have never seen it enforced.)

You can use any word you want in the keyword field without getting filtered. However, using a banned word in the parenthetical can and will bury your title behind Amazon’s ADULT filter.

But how do I find keywords?

Throwing random words into the keyword field is not effective. It is much better to find common search phrases and include them.

If you go to the Kindle Store and type in “first time,” a long list of results comes back. These results are the most commonly searched terms. Disregarding “first time dad,” you have “first time erotica,” “first time sex erotica,” “first time sex virgin,” “first time lesbians,” any of which might apply to your story. This technique can help you find the terms to use.

Disclaimer: Certain words are not allowed inside your blurb or title. To continue the example from above, using “virgin” in either will get your book filtered. Make sure to look into which words are filterable before proceeding.

This is the first in a series of Guest Author posts, where erotica and romance writers are welcome to create an article on the topic of their choosing. Today’s piece is from romance author Samantha Westlake, and delves into the thorny issue of pacing a short story.

Pacing a Story, Part I: Short Works

“Boring is the right thought at the wrong time.”  - Jack Gardner

Jack was probably not thinking about writing when he made this quote, but his statement applies just as well to the composition of a fictional story – even an erotic one!  Good erotic and romantic writing doesn’t just depend on having enough cocks to go around; it needs proper timing and balance to provide a proper flow to the story.

The easiest explanation for this is to understand that, despite how most people think of erotica as a written version of a porn video, the biggest defining difference is the presence of a story.  Just as how some choose to watch porn for the plotlines, most erotica readers are looking to be swept up in a story world – not just to have dicks shoved directly into every hole (although that will come in time!).

This man was not properly aroused by the erotic story.

The most general rule for writing erotica is the “rule of thirds” – if your story was split into these three categories, the word count for each would be roughly equal.

The first third of a story should be introduction and the ramp up.  In every story, no matter where it’s headed, the first page or two should introduce the main characters.  If they’re going to be with us for the entire tale, they need to be brought into existence right away, so that the reader can internalize their presence and features.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that you can’t include plenty of sexy comments!  And indeed, this is the chance to get your readers “warmed up.”  Throw in references to bulging muscles, pert breasts, increased pressure making pants tighten, sudden blushes and feelings of warm moistness, and more.  Just like a temptress can flirt with a man until he’s all but foaming at the mouth, you should be focusing on getting your readers feverishly flicking through the pages in a rush to get to the sexy times.

And this brings us to the second third – the sex!  By the time you reach this point, you’re at the top of the story ramp; your readers should be hot and ready to dive into swinging dicks and bouncing breasts.  So give it to them!  This whole third of the tale should be the most intense action, so make sure that you don’t switch over to long descriptions or run-on sentences.  Keep things short, spicy, and to the point!

Just because we’ve reached the sex, however, doesn’t mean that you should slack off in the writing.  Even as the sex is happening, the story should be building, climbing up towards the climax (both figuratively and literally).  The characters are striving to finish, and make sure that they don’t take a break until they reach that point.

Although your characters have “finished”, so to say, that doesn’t mean that your job as a writer is done.  There’s still a third left in the story.  This final part should be the “cooldown,” similar to exercise.  The characters are exhausted, you’re exhausted, and you want to wrap things up as quickly as possible.  But don’t rush too fast – this is your chance to provide a bit more exposition on your characters, to round them out and really show them as multidimensional.  That may not seem important to you, but there’s a reason why amateur porn is still so popular.  When we think of a character as more real, we care more about what happens to him or her and empathize with their successes or failures.  And if you decide to use the same character in a sequel, they’ll have more details to exploit and write about.

The final third is also a great place to pad out the word count.  If you wrote some sexy action scenes but your story is still under 5k words, adding a final scene or two can quickly throw another thousand words onto the word count.  To you, this might seem useless – the characters have come, why bother with more – but one of the most common complaints by readers is that the tale ends too abruptly.  Write that final third, and both sides win!

So remember, plan the timing in any story that you write.  The first third should be a rapid ramp up, quickly setting the scene, describing the characters, and getting the reader hot under the collar.  The second third should be consistently intense, but still building towards the final climax.  The last third should be gradually cooling off, rounding out the characters and setting the scene for a sequel.
