_________________________Secrets of A Seaside Town An excerpt from 'The Only Exception' (Please note, the excerpt is yet to be edited and is subject to change before publication)He was the love of her life, always had been. She held his heart, always had and always would. The big day had arrived; the day where they would profess their love in front of those who doubted and judged them. It was the day they would tie their lives together in every way. They already belonged to each other; they had gone through life as partners in crime and partners in love and devotion. Nothing could break their bond; nothing could take away the everlasting love they shared. In a world where love was had too often but not enough; where it was lost at the drop of a hat, they had found an admiration, a passion, a connection that could only be described as all-consuming, all-powerful and true, true love.
The bride stood in front of the mirrored-wall, the butterflies in her stomach dancing in excitement at the thought of looking into his alluring blue eyes, and looked at the reflections of the women around her. They were in the tiny little room adjoining the church. The summer sun shone down on the church on the cliff-top, where seagulls and the crashing waves would be heard when she tried to put her love into words. Her mother stood behind her, making sure every hair on the bride’s head was in place. The bridesmaids were in a corner, checking each other over. There would be no cleavage spillage, no lipstick on teeth, no frayed dresses. The flower girl sat on a chair in the other corner, swinging her legs as ballet pumps were being slid on her little feet by the groom’s mother. The flower girl wriggled in excitement as the hairstylist eased tiny little roses into her dark, curly hair. The bride was not nervous. She was eager to get to the end of the aisle and see the man she would grow old with.
The groom stood in front of the mirror in the vicar’s office. His grey suit fitted his body with ease, and the lemon yellow waistcoat stretched across his wide chest comfortably. He looked at the men in the office with him. His best man and brother was busy attaching the buttonhole to the left side of his jacket, over the heart that would only ever belong to one woman. The three groomsmen were in the corner, fiddling with their own pins and making jokes at the groom’s expense. He simply laughed with them as his thoughts turned to his father, who was absent in body; he believed he had given himself to the angels, so that his son could marry his. His Lois Lane. But he would always be present in spirit, standing next to his son as he recited his vows. He thought about his soon-to-be-wife, honoured that she would be taking his name, and wondered what she was thinking as she was surrounded by the women in her life who were responsible for helping bring her back to him.The groom was not nervous. He was eager to stand at the altar and see the love of his life walk towards him. He couldn’t wait to look into her chocolate brown eyes and, in front of everyone they knew, promise to love her forever and beyond the day that the death parted them.
The door clicked open and the vicar popped his head around the door to take the bride’s father. He stepped out of the room and headed across the corridor to prepare to give his youngest daughter away to the man he considered a second son.The vicar’s eyes locked with the groom’s. The smile that played on his lips mirrored the rest of the town’s, knowing that it was the day the childhood sweethearts of Folquay would get their happily ever after. And then he said the words the groom had been waiting his entire life to hear.“It’s time.”

About Sydney Jamesson - in her own words

There are those moments in life when a person you respect says something to you that strikes a chord, we’ve all had them … that moment came one Parents’ Evening when I was 16. An inspirational teacher said; “Your daughter should consider a career in Journalism or as a writer, she has a vivid imagination and a flair for creative writing …” As a wide-eyed teenager, those words were music to my ears. How prophetic was it that I went on to do just that … I have worked in Insurance, Fashion and in advertising as a Copywriter and Commercial Journalist and loved every minute of it; creative people are a lot of fun to be around. Granted, the ones I’ve met have been a little unreliable at times and some of their ideas have been off the chart but, having said that, days come and go very quickly when you’re enjoying what you’re doing and being paid for it. I especially looked forward to the liquid lunches, they were a welcome perk of the job … I swapped the day job for a more meaningful enterprise: having our daughter Jenna. Now 28, she’s a fiercely independent woman living the dream in Australia with her boyfriend of six years. She was a heavenly surprise that had me working freelance for four years, doing what I could between feeds, playgroups and afternoon lessons in preparation for starting school. It’s a ‘story’ we can all identify with, I’m sure. I secured my English Degree and made a sideways move into teaching in 1997 and, six years later, became Head of English in a High School, making it my mission in life to introduce young people to a range of quality reading material. Teaching is a vocation and, as such, I take my role very seriously. I try to foster a love of all things creative in my students and encourage them to find that creativity within themselves. I had lots of people to encourage me and for that I am extremely grateful, but some children are not as fortunate. For as long as I can remember, I have lived with The Story of Us in my head; the fact that Elizabeth Parker is an English teacher should come as no surprise to you: as novelists we write, initially, about what we know … Yet, I should confess, she isn’t me but rather that young, sensitive and naïve woman we all were or still are. The difference being, she has been victimized and, because of it, remained hidden. But, unlike some other characters who may have suffered at the hands of others, she is not damaged: wary yes, but not damaged. She still believes people are innately good and that is one of her many qualities. It is her propensity for compassion that allows her to invite Ayden Stone into her world when, on the face of it, he’s exactly what she doesn’t need. So that’s me, furiously typing away until the early hours, creating an epic tale that covers an 18 month period, taking three novels to unveil the intricacies of a 21st century fairy tale.

His Armored Heart by Mary Palmerin : REVIEW
I love reviewing Mary's work. I love reviewing, full stop. I have 3 WIPs and I continue to devour as many books as time will allow because I love to get lost in a world another has created. Mary does this superbly. She's having a tough time right now. His Armored Heart was released on Friday May 9th...That weekend, her small American town was struck by an unexpected tornado and her house suffered greatly. She is unable to live at home, but continues to stay strong for her two young boys. She gets up in the morning and goes to work, not knowing what will happen when she leaves. Please go and show her your love and support via her facebook page. She's unable to promote her work while dealing with what happened, but this is one story that should be shared. Thank you xo
Mary Palmerin has done it again. She has written another heart-wrenching tale of pain, hope and love as part of The Sorrow Series. Only this time the story is focussed on Garrett, Lyla’s (the protagonist in Secrets of a Broken Girl, Succumbing to Scars and Sorrow and Shadows of Scars and Sorrow) older brother. I've read this novella three times; chapter by chapter as Mary wrote it, then put my beta hat on and read it as a whole. And then I read it again prior to this review. Each time I read it I find something new, or notice something I didn’t before. That is one of the best aspects of Mary’s talent; her stories suck you into a world of intricately detailed plots and beautiful, yet haunting sub plots. If you haven’t yet dove into the town of Rigdon, Kansas and met the characters of this fabulous series, you can start with Succumbing to Scars and Sorrow. This review may contain spoilers – books 0.5, 1 and 2 should be read prior to reading His Armored Heart. And now we come to Garrett…
I have read every piece of Mary’s writing; all of her published works and a few that are still works in progress. His Armored Heart is, so far, my favourite. It is an intense emotional rollercoaster that had me strung out throughout the book, and I found come comfort from the intensity by slowly falling a little more for Garrett Harper with each page I turned. As a woman, I find vulnerability in a man attractive – even the tough guys just need a hug once in a while – but I also find strength a powerful aphrodisiac; we all want someone who we know can and will take care of us. Garrett encompasses this and much more. There is strength in his weaknesses, and kinks in his armor that prevent him being a heartless robot with no hope of salvation. He is strong, but plagued by his past. He feels like he has failed, yet he perseveres. And he has lost, yet somehow finds the strength to feel again. He finds that strength in Brooklyn Lancaster. The death of Garrett’s best friend and Brooklyn’s brother, Trent, is what brings the two together. Cue the tears. It’s a heartbreaker.I really liked Brooklyn; she is kind of an everywoman character and her strength and compassion is admirable. My heart broke for her, for both of them, multiple times. What transpires between them can happen to any of us and that is what made me an emotional wreck.Mary wrote the tale of Garrett and Brooklyn with so much finesse and sensitivity that it really pulled at and toyed with every one of my emotions.Yes, it’s fast-paced (but as you will see when reading, life is too short to waste it avoiding the inevitable). There is a lot of internal monologue (which I loved! Sometimes the things we don’t say hold more merit than the ones we utter). It’s emotional; pessimism and optimism collide and create a powerful love that was once forbidden, but now allowed to flourish. But every story has it’s ending and book 2.5 in The Sorrow Series is just the beginning for Garrett and Brooklyn. You won't want it to end. I know I finished it and instantly demanded Mary send me some of the next instalment, which she is busy penning, and I am greedily accepting chapter after chapter. She is a truly talented writer; she has written and released two novels and two novellas in just over a year; each one boundary pushing and addictive. What more could you want?
Five stars to Mary Palmerin for making me cry. Again. Multiple times. And for giving me another book boyfriend to swoon over.
Excerpt ‘…Garrett allowed himself to feel tormented as his naked body was planted in his mattress as he permitted his nostrils to fill with the scent of her and the sweet love that they made the night before. His mind played wicked games with him, flashing the promises she made to him afore. His ears also betrayed him as he was certain he could hear her unique Southern drawl whispering I love you. But she was gone. Absent. He felt the urge to pain himself, to be certain it was reality he was living in and not the typical lullabies full of darkness and loss…’

**COVER REVEAL** His Armored Heart by Mary E. Palmerin
I had the pleasure of beta reading His Armored Heart, #2.5 in The Sorrow Series, by Mary E. Palmerin and I guarantee, Garrett Harper is one man you need to get your hands on. The story is emotional and pulls on every one of those heart strings. And it is hot as hell.
RELEASED FRIDAY, MAY 9TH 2014 for Kindle, Nook and iBooks
Mary revealed the cover, which she had a huge input in the creation of, on Sunday.
So without further ado, I give to you the tortured, scarred, strong yet vulnerable, loveable, and down right sexy Garrett Joseph Harper...
SYNOPSIS Dive into the life of another character in the tragic and heart-wrenching Sorrow Series.
Garrett Joseph Harper was not the man he once was. His life was altered years ago when his best friend and fellow Marine, Trent, was killed before him while serving in Afghanistan. Circumstances went from bad to worse when his baby sister, Lyla, was the victim of a grisly attack that nearly took her life.
When Lyla finally seems like she is on the bridge to recovering from the life that she once had with the help of her soon-to-be-husband, Everett, Garrett is sinking deeper into the abyss of darkness.
With the memories of all the gruesomeness that has plagued him he goes about life on autopilot spending his small town life working at the coal mines and drinking his paychecks away at Rigdon's holy place for gossip and trouble, King's Bar.
But Garrett's flame of life is lit once more by Brooklyn Lancaster, a woman who has had eyes for him for as long as she knew what love was. Will the connection Brooklyn has to Garrett's past prevent them from moving forward? Or will something more serious and permanent tear the two new-found lovers away just when both feel a sense of normalcy for the first time in years?
In this second novella of the Sorrow Series, you will have insight into another character's pain, sorrow, and yes, hope. Be prepared for many twists and turns. You know what they say... nothing is ever what it seems.
** Graphic content. Not suitable for readers under the age of eighteen. **

A Taste of Erotica by A M Harding: Review and Interview
Andy is another one of those anonymous treasures that I met on Twitter. I’ve followed him for a long time and try to keep up with the stories he posts on his blog When he released A Taste of Erotica, it went straight on my TBR.
As well as being a prolific writer of good solid erotica, he is a charming man and absolutely worth the follow if you don’t already. Andy answered my ten questions... Find out more about the man in the suit below!
A Taste of Erotica is a collection of some of Andy’s best-loved stories. There is something for everyone in this treasury of seven hot, steamy tales.I often find erotica repetitive and struggle to stay interested if there isn’t a strong story behind it. That didn’t happen with Andy. I read A Taste of Erotica in one sitting and really enjoyed it.Andy’s ability to create vivid imagery is inspiring. As a writer, I feel like visualising and writing about sex from a variety of angles is where the fun really is. Sure, we have to cull a lot and be brutal with what makes an impact and what doesn’t but the nitty gritty is exactly why I both love to read and write erotic scenes. The fun of the writing really comes across with Andy; it’s clear he loves what he does and the reader takes on that love when turning the pages of A Taste of Erotica. The passion, anticipation and climax in each story are testament to that.
It’s difficult to review collections because I find myself wanting to review every piece. I urge you to download and read Andy’s work yourself so I will pick one story to elaborate on. Shelter on a Stormy night. It’s my favourite, and has been since Andy first posted it on his blogThe thing I like about this story, and most of Andy’s writing, is the lack of certain information. Yes, that is a positive. Because sometimes you don’t want to know if the couple are in a committed relationship, occasional lovers, or old friends. It is refreshing to be told a story and be able to put yourself, your current situation and your fantasy into it. Andy doesn’t just tell a story, he makes your imagination come alive.
The storm heightens the anticipation. I could hear the rain pounding on the windows. I could feel the warmth from the fire. I could see the couple by the amber light, making good use of the table.
Stimulating the senses beyond the reader thinking ‘this is hot, I need to squeeze my legs together’ is the difference, I think, between smut and good-quality erotica. Andy does a fabulous job of awakening those senses and solidifies him in my mind as a great writer whose work deserves to be read. I can’t wait to read what else Andy has to offer and little birdy told me this morning that there is more on the way. Trust me when I say you’re missing out if you haven’t read the work of the fabulous A M Harding.

Let's get personal...
1. Describe yourself in 3 words.Filthy minded Gentleman2. What would the title of your autobiography be?"Could have tried harder". That was the constant cry of every teacher at school and several managers since. An alternative title could be "Mr horizontal" as I've frequently been accused of being too laid back.3. Name one thing people would be surprised to know about you.Apart from the fact that I write erotica... I've rebuilt a car from the ground up, every nut and bolt.4. It's the weekend and you're celebrating with friends/family. What song do you put on to get the party started?Probably something by Green Day, most likely American Idiot.5. What is the one material possession you couldn't live without?A camera. I've taken a ridiculous number of photos over the years and I hardly ever go anywhere without a camera. Curiously though its normally anything but people that I take pictures of.6. True or false? All's fair in love and war.Definitely true.7. You're stranded on a desert island. What three things do you need to stay sane?A good toolkit has to be the first thing. If I have that I can make almost anything I need. Ideally a library but failing that a solar powered e-reader full of books I haven't read. Finally I think it would have to be an mp3 player full of music.8. Is the glass half empty or half full? The glass is clearly too big if its not full. But if I had to choose I'd say its half full.9. What is in it?By choice it would have to be either a proper old fashioned English ale or maybe a nice single malt (whisky).10. True or false? Man is an island. Definitely true. I've always been very self sufficient and independent. I've never needed to seek approval from everyone else for my own happiness. That's not to say I'm lonely, I'm just happy with my own company most of the time.

She is Beauty

She has no idea how beguiling she is. She has no idea of the beauty she possesses. It is in her eyes; in the sapphire spheres that seem to focus on a world beyond the one she walks. It is in her lips; on the stoic twist of her mouth that betrays her control. It is in her face; the heavenly glow on her cheeks that flush with life. It is in her hair; how each lock blows in the wind as if being combed by Mother Nature herself. It is in her hands; every reverent caress, every gentle touch, everything in her grasp handled as if it is a precious gift. It is in her posture; she stands tall and proud, squaring her shoulders when faced with a challenge. It is in her body; her elegant, fluid dexterity and the magnificent swish of her hips. It is in her feet; never seeming to touch the floor, each delicate step a graceful dance on a cloud. It is in her laugh; a musical, virtuous chime that could bring angels down from Heaven to sit at her feet and listen. It is in her voice; one that commands nothing, void of expectation because it has felt disappointment. It is a voice laced with hope, compassion and the promise of professed true love. It is in her embrace; warm enough to thaw the most frozen of hearts. It is a hold that won't let go, but one that lends plenty of room to flourish. It is a hold like no other. And it is in her heart; an organ that serves only to keep the body alive. But it is the home of the soul and her soul is pure. Her heart has been broken and scarred, maimed and shattered beyond recognition, but never her soul. She won't give up. She will collect hearts in the small hands with the soft touch and her soul will protect them, shield them, love them like no other. She is beauty.

It's all fun and games...until it turns nasty

Today I witnessed a woman being verbally abused outside the coffee shop. The man shouting the expletives and curses that brought her to tears was drunk. It was harmless (yet random at 11.30 this morning) at first - he was swaying and slurring and offering everyone a bite of his sausage roll. I kept my head down and tried to get half an hour of writing done. The woman was sitting at the same table as me. I was 3 feet away as I watched her slowly retreat. It was heart breaking. And not solely because of the drunk man. But because of the twenty or so other people around us; the only other woman got up and quickly disappeared. All eyes were on the woman opposite me as she was teased for her weight. It then escalated to ridiculous insults I won't repeat. Everyone around us sat and watched. Some laughed. No one tried to pacify the drunk, put him in his place or look away to find help. The poor woman sat with her head down and took everything he said to her until he got bored, laughed it off and asked me if I would bet £5 on him winning an arm wrestle. I politely told him where to put his five pound note. I was spared a battering so he could burp and pick up singing 'We Will Rock You' where he left off.
I've spent all day wishing I'd done something to help her. She was a total stranger but I think I'd rather have taken the abuse than watch her take it. I feel guilty for not doing something. I feel disgusted that one human would even contemplate doing that to another.I am repulsed that people sat with their coffees and found it entertaining. Are we exposed to so much small mindedness and judgement and discrimination that harassing a woman in the street, or at all, is considered normal? Are we conditioned to just sit by and watch it happen? Are we that selfish that we will laugh at another's pain to avoid our own?
I'll be dedicating tonight's glass of Sauvignon to the woman. She was so brave and courageous and awe-inspiring to have put up with shit she didn't deserve when all she wanted was to read her book. The next post tonight will also be dedicated to her. It's something I wrote a while ago and finally have a reason to suck it up and share it. Thank you for reading. ❤️

Once Upon a Time

I've been working on the follow-up collection of short stories to carry on from Second Chance Hero, but I’ve decided to pull it.
I don’t know if it was the recent flurry of bad reviews, the message I received from a reader, or something completely different, but something sent my confidence into a tailspin until it face planted the tarmac. I’ve always found it easier to believe criticism, but there are two reviews I read on the morning of March 3rd that have stuck with me and I’ve taken them on as more than readers' opinions. I’ve tried to brush it off but I can’t. One review said Second Chance Hero was so bad it made the reader write their first everbad review. The other said the characters were one-dimensional, underdeveloped and the story was frustrating. Both elaborated further...That’s my worst nightmare as a writer come true. Then, whilst sitting on the train trying to rein in the feeling of dread that washed over me, my phone pinged with a Facebook message. ‘Hi, I just read your book…’ it said. ‘Great’, I thought and opened the message.Salt, meet wound. The reader said she had been cheated on in the past and found my story glorified affairs. She said I was young, immature and naive, and writing what I had written showed my lack of intelligence. That did it. I cried on the way to work, earning some weird looks from fellow commuters, and I haven’t written a word since.
That was the day I lost my mojo and I can’t find it. I struggle with confidence, who doesn't? Everyone wonders if they're good enough, and we all wait for the day we feel like we're not. I'm in a writing funk that has started branching out into other aspects of my life. Writing has always been a release. It helped with my break up, it helps me deal with being a single mother, and with everything else in my 'real life'. I find it difficult to talk about how I feel and often don't until I'm asked to. I've always written it instead.I have changed how, when and where I write to try and find that place to lose myself in, but I’m filled with anxiety the second my pen touches paper or my fingers hover over the keys. I can’t even write reviews.
So, for now, Secrets of A Seaside Town is on hold.I’m still working on my series. I don’t know what I’m going to do with it, but I’ll to stay up later and push myself further to make sure I get it right.
I never wanted to excuse being unfaithful. I wanted to bring up real issues and give them a twist. I wanted to draw attention to things, whether in a good or bad light. I wanted to allow readers to explore their imaginations. I just wanted to tell a story.

Shadows of Scars and Sorrow by Mary E. Palmerin: Review and Interview
Mary Palmerin is an amazing woman. I am honoured to be a part of her writing journey and even more honoured to have the privilege of calling her a friend. She has a full-time job which isn’t easy, two beautiful boys who have everything they deserve because she works tirelessly to give it to them and she writes, reads and reviews books like there’s no tomorrow! In less than a year she has released two novels (the second, which I’m about to review, went live today!) and a novella.
Her talent and determination is inspirational and she is a prolific writer and an incredible role model for her children.
And then we get to The Sorrow Series. I was first introduced to Mary’s debut back in September and I lapped up the story of Lyla and Everett because it was a story that gave me everything I wanted in a series: love, romance, steamy sex, angst, twists and turns, and the unexpected. Succumbing to Scars and Sorrow got a solid 5-stars from me with the criticism that I wanted more Everett Brown. I’m rather impatient when it comes to a man in a suit who is a closet romantic and possesses certain, ahem, skills.
Everett Brown has secrets. Secrets that Lyla has been waiting for him to tell her for months. He has successfully evaded them, but Lyla is becoming impatient.
With the vicious attack of his beloved still fresh in his mind along with the painful loss he feels, his emotions play a battle against one another, testing his strength and his ability to hold himself together.
Will the secrets that he keeps jeopardize his relationship to the woman who has his heart? Or will he learn to cope with memories that resurface with a vengeance and move on to the next phase of his life… marriage.
In this second novel of this beautifully tragic series, Everett Brown will face the family he thought he knew, a past he tries so desperately to disassociate himself from, and the potential for his life to be turned upside down again. But is he strong enough to make it through another nightmare?
With Michael Thomas and Davis Moore still free, justice has yet to be served. In this whirlwind contemporary erotic romance novel, this young couple’s relationship will be tested with several wicked curveballs and twists that even they aren’t prepared for.
Shadows of Scars and Sorrow did not disappoint and certainly satisfied my craving for Everett and a cracking good read. Mary does a great job delving into the mind of a ‘real’ man and in turn gives us yet another powerfully beautiful tale to add to the rapidly growing collection of her work. I’m not one who falls for the tough exterior men try to trick us with and it was refreshing and insightful to be in Everett’s mind. He mourns the loss of their baby in book one, he deals with Lyla’s past and the effect is has on her and their relationship and he opens up his own investigation to try to find the people who almost took her from him, while trying to stay strong and build a life for the woman he loves. I loved seeing what he saw and feeling what he felt and physically swooned at the part I will give away as ‘my heart beats only for you’. Men feel pain, regret, fear and love as strongly as women and Mary portrayed that realistically and with honest, relateable conviction. She has a way with words that will leave you with tears in your eyes and a lump in the back of your throat.
We see the strength of Lyla and the pain of what she has had to face through the eyes of the man who loves her more than anything. This is not a mushy ‘we love each other and we’re going to run away to Happily Ever After Land’ kind of book. Their relationship teeters on the edge of collapse more than once and has you wondering if they’re going to make it. it is real, it is graphic, it is raw and it is smoking hot, and is the perfect display of love being able to conquer the past.
As in the first instalment, Shadows of Scars and Sorrow is about more than just the love between Lyla and Everett. Old demons rear their heads and new troubles arise, interwoven with a frightening sub-plot, hope and fear of what’s to come and the ending will have you an emotional wreck, gripping your armrests.
It is a psychological thriller, it is an erotic romance and it is a five star must-read. The story of Lyla and Everett is not over and as always I’m eager for more of them and the other characters in The Sorrow Series.
Interview
1. For readers who aren’t familiar with The Sorrow Series, can you tell them what to expect when they dive into it?First, I just want to say thank you for having me over on your blog. I’m honored and grateful. In order for everyone to fully understand the multi-faceted Sorrow Series, it is important that I start from the very beginning.I never planned on sharing Lyla’s story with anyone, let alone publish it without a pen name for the whole world to see. Her story was burned into my mind. I knew what I wanted to write, but knowing and doing are two different things. So, I came up with the title of my debut first. The title fits her life because she succumbs to many incubi that plagued her for years. Heartache that was an all-too familiar feeling for the young woman that never lost hope. Such a beautiful feeling, yet hard to hold on to at times. Then I wrote it, and I am damn glad that I did. She meets a man, her savior, a man that believes in the woman beneath the surface. Then there is the cliffhanger at the end of book 1. I knew that I wanted to create a series of four books, but I was not at all planning on the four additional novellas. The other characters within the series were screaming “Tell my story!” So I am. I have since released Lyla’s prequel novella. I have three other novellas planned, one telling Garrett’s story, one for Rosalynn, and one for Everett prior to meeting Lyla. While reading my series, be prepared to be traumatized. I am not the type of writer that omits details out of fear or judgment. I write to tell a tale that is real and true. Women like Lyla Harper deserve their place in the world of HEA. Real life is messy and heartbreaking, but Lyla’s story shows that through all of that, there is hope for something beautiful; and she finds that with Everett Brown.
2. What is your writing process? I don’t have a set writing process, as every project is different and unique. With book 1, I just typed. With book 2, I suppose I was more organized. I wrote/edited/shared with my beta readers chapter by chapter. With my prequel, I wrote and published it in a very short time. It depends on my mood as well as the content. With novella 2 (Garrett’s story) I am just writing as I go, as the story plays out in my head like a movie. I feel the urge to just write so I do. I will tell you my most challenging piece was book 2, and I believe that was solely due to confidence. Once I allowed the negativity to release itself and basically say “fuck off” to the people that didn’t support what I was choosing to do, my work really improved. The fluidity and transitions melded together better than before. I also had dozens of drafts and multiple endings to book 2. Hopefully everyone enjoys it just as much as I did creating it. I worked tirelessly and passionately on this piece, just as all of them, however book 2 is dear to me because it was hardest for me to write.
3. The Sorrow Series will consist of 4 novels and 4 novellas. I can’t wait to see how everything ties together. What’s next for you when the series is complete? While working on book 2, I also had other projects that I was working on. As you know, I became slightly overwhelmed, so I put the other projects on the back burner to focus all my attention on the series. I don’t want to give away too much, but I will tell you one project is a historical romance novel. It is also a stand-alone and I am in love with the leads. The other is also a bit controversial, but let’s face it, I love controversy. The twenty-something female lead is much younger than her older lover.
4. What is the most rewarding/satisfying aspect of writing? Knowing that someone has been touched by the stories that I create. I have had dozens of emails from women that are like Lyla, beautiful survivors living and breathing in the world. They have overcome adversity, as many do, and live life to the fullest. That, in itself is a dream I never thought I would touch. Being able to affect people with the tales that I write is indescribable, and beyond words.
5. If you could change one thing about your writing/publication process, what would it be?What an excellent question. Honestly, I don’t think I would change a thing. I believe that everything happens for a reason. The only I would wish for is more confidence in myself. It wasn’t an easy thing to be thrown into. I was oblivious to the publishing world. I was only certain of two things; I love to write and I love to read. Of course not everyone will enjoy what I write, that’s inevitable. The world would be a boring place if everyone liked the same things. It’s the ruthlessness that I wasn’t quite prepared for. But, my skin is getting thicker by the second, and I would not change a moment of the journey that God has blessed me with.
Let's Get Personal... 1. Describe yourself in three words.Passionate, giving, strong-willed2. What would the title of your autobiography be?Phases of a Selfless Heart3. Name one thing people would be surprised to know about you.I have saved a handful of lives before.4. It’s the weekend and you’re celebrating with friends/family. What song do you put on to get the party started? What a hard question! I am a huge music lover, as are all my friends and family. If it is a day out at my mother’s property and we are lounging by the pool or are on the boat on the lake, it would definitely be something by Jack Johnson. My brother is the controller of all music, lol. There is not much better than the harmonious voice of Jack Johnson. He is lovely and definitely one of my favorites.5. What is one material possession you couldn’t live without?Paper and pens. A laptop would one day die or become outdated. I have my hands, my mind and thoughts, and a pen and paper. I can create any story that I want.6. True or false? All’s fair in love and war?Ah, you are quite the philosopher, Ms. Sherwin. I love that, because I am as well. This is a great question. I would have to say false. I think it is deceitful, honestly. A person doing whatever they want in order to get what they think they deserve. I suppose it also depends what aspect you look at it, as every situation is different. Furthermore, I am not a competitive person, I am far from it. I see myself as selfless. I believe in helping people, embracing one another to achieve a common goal. Unfortunately, the world is full of selfish people who don’t see life the same way. I can only tell you that I couldn’t hurt or deceive another individual for personal gain.7. You’re stranded on a dessert island. What three things do you need to stay sane?Well, if other people don’t count (such as family and friends), I would have to say a pen, an endless supply of paper, and coffee or wine J8. Is the glass half empty or half full? You want honesty, I will give it to you. Everyone has flaws. One of mine is being a bit too hard on myself. If it is a situation that I am in, I have a tendency to see it as half empty, but it is something that I am continuously working on. I strive to be a better person with each passing day and I am also trying to believe in myself more and increase my confidence. I am lucky to have some pretty amazing people in my life, along with my family, I have a few girlfriends that I trust with my life. They tell me how it is. I know that this is something that I need to work on, and I am trying my damndest!9. What is in it?Coffee in the morning. Shiraz at night.10. True or false? No man is an island.False. I believe it is crucial for an individual to be loved. I also think that human beings thrive on the existence of others, learning lessons and attributing those to their own life. Isolation is never a healthy thing, not entirely. Of course it is important to have time alone to rest and reflect, but not interminably.

The Story Continues...

Second Chance Hero was always supposed to be a standalone title. It is long – readers have either loved or hated that. You’re never going to please all the people all the time and that is something I drilled into myself before I even thought about sharing what I had written. But I wanted to develop the story and give it more depth than a love story that would soon be forgotten.
The feeling an author gets when they read a review of their work is indescribable. I have had one star reviews labelling it as nothing but smut and five star reviews calling the best book someone read all year and I am grateful for every single one.
Reviews are more than an ego boost. Our potential as writers is never reached; the bar is always being raised and we are always growing as storytellers. If you have read a book and loved it (or not) please leave a review. The world of fiction is tough, competitive and insanely rewarding, but we rely on readers to tell us what we’re doing wrong. Or right.

Having said that, I have had messages and reviews either assuming Second Chance Hero is a series, or suggesting it should be. After reading enough of said reviews and messages to get me thinking about continuing the story, the voices of the characters popped up and told me where to take their tales. I will be continuing the story of Folquay but it will not be a full-length novel. It will be a collection of six short stories, each with a theme, an accompanying song and the ending each character deserves. So I invite you to sit back with a beverage that will last a while, read the preview below and join me in discovering the secrets of a seaside town…

From Folquay, the harbour town that gave us Second Chance Hero comes Secrets of A Seaside Town, a collection of short stories that reveal what happened after the final page of Jenna and Deacon’s story was turned.Secrets of A Seaside town catches up with Deacon and Jenna, Bradley and Rachel, Jonas and Grace, Esteban and Mindy and Emma. Six short stories that tell of hidden desires, undying love, the fight for forgiveness and a ticking clock. With situations unresolved, stories left untold and endings still to be written, sit back and listen as the wind blows through the narrow, cobbled streets of the town by the sea and Folquay whispers its secrets to you.

***The Only Exception

He was the love of her life, always had been.
The church was on the cliff-top, where seagulls and the crashing waves would be heard when she tried to put her love into words. Her mother stood behind her, making sure every hair on the bride’s head was in place. The bridesmaids were in a corner, checking each other over; there would be no cleavage spillage, no lipstick on teeth, no frayed dresses. The flower girl sat on a chair in the other corner, swinging her legs as ballet pumps were being slid on her little feet by the groom’s mother. The flower girl wriggled in excitement as the hairstylist slide tiny little roses into her dark, curly hair. The bride was not nervous. She was eager to get to the end of the aisle and see the man she would grow old with.
The groom stood in front of the mirror in the vicar’s office. His grey suit fit his body with ease, and the lemon yellow waistcoat stretched across his wide chest comfortably. He looked at the men in the office with him. His best man and brother was busy attaching the buttonhole to the left side of his jacket, over the heart that would only ever belong to one woman. The three groomsmen were in the corner fiddling with their own pins and making jokes at the groom’s expense. He simply laughed with them as his thoughts turned to his father, who was absent in body; he believed he had given himself to the angels, so that he could marry his. His Lois Lane. But he would always be present in spirit, standing next to his son as he recited his vows. He thought about his soon-to-be wife, honoured that she would be taking his name and wondered what she was thinking as she was surrounded by the women in her life who were responsible for helping bring her back to him.The groom was not nervous. He was eager to stand at the altar and see the love of his life walk towards him. He couldn’t wait to look into her chocolate brown eyes and, in front of everyone they knew, promise to love her forever and beyond the day that the death parted them.
The door clicked open and the vicar popped his head in to take the bride’s father. He stepped out of the room and headed across the corridor to prepare to give his youngest daughter away to the man he considered a second son.The vicar’s eyes locked with the groom’s. The smile that played on his lips mirrored the rest of the town’s, knowing that this was the day the childhood sweethearts of Folquay would get their happily ever after. And then he said the words the groom had been waiting his entire life to hear.“It’s time.”
The groom stood at the altar with his hands behind his back, flanked by his best man, Bradley. Silence descended on the church as the double doors at the back opened slowly. Phillipa stepped out first, an excited grin on her face as she took her first step. She walked down the aisle as practised, her dark ringlets bouncing as she scattered yellow rose petals from a wicker basket swinging in her other hand.Everyone, from the three women sitting at the back who had been labelled as nothing more than ‘trait girls’, to the town busy body, to the owner of the florist that provided the flowers for the day, to the bride and groom’s families in the front, smiled as the little girl danced her path with glee.Phillipa reached the end of the aisle, gave the groom a sly high-five and took her seat in the front next to her grandma.Pachelbel’s Canon sounded out as the bridesmaids, Jade, Grace and Abbie, dressed in lemon-yellow, floor-length tube dresses and holding small bouquets of white roses, took their journey down the aisle, accompanied by the groomsmen, Steve, Jonas and Carl. All eyes returned to the entrance as the bridesmaids and groomsmen took their places and the Wedding March began to play…
Esteban lead his daughter into the moment she had dreamed of since she was a little girl. She wore an ivory dress that lightly brushed the floor when she walked, and a train that reached the floor and trailed behind her. The dress was made of silk with lace detailing and flowed over her curves with ease. Her white plimsolls were silent on the floor as her eyes locked with the man who had always been her everything and she walked towards him. He had never seen her look as beautiful as she did in that moment; her eyes glistened with emotion and sparkled with joy. Her cheeks flushed with a healthy glow that seemed to light up the space around her. She took his breath away. She held her breath as her father placed her hand in her soon-to-be husband’s and squeezed them together before taking his seat. The groom kept the bride’s hand tightly in his as they turned to the vicar and breathed a sigh of a relief. It was finally happening.“Dear friends and family. It is with great affection and pride that we are gathered here today to witness and celebrate the holy matrimony of Deacon Axel Reid and Jenna Nina Bethan Rivera. To this sacred moment they bring the fullness of their hearts as a treasure and as a gift, to share with one another.“They bring the dreams which bind them together in an eternal commitment. They bring their gifts and talents, their unique personalities and spirits and will unite together into one being as they build their life together. We rejoice with them in thankfulness for the creation of this union of hearts built on friendship, respect and love.”A single tear fell from Jenna’s eye as she and Deacon turned to face each other and held their hands between them.“Deacon and Jenna have chosen to write their own vows. May we have the rings, please.”Bradley stepped forward and handed them the rings.Deacon held the ring over the tip of Jenna’s finger.“Jenna, I love you.I promise to be yours forever,I promise to hold you as mine,I promise to be your lover, your soul mate,As you are mine, the other half of myself.I promise to hold you when you cry,To laugh when you laugh,And comfort you when you need it.I’ll be your forever, as you are mine.I promise to love you until I take my last breath,To be your best friend,Your hero,For as long as we both shall live.”The tears built in Deacon’s eyes as the relief of putting his feelings for Jenna into words washed over him. Tears fell from their families’ and friends’ eyes and Jenna’s lip trembled as she prepared to devote herself to her beloved.Jenna held the ring over the tip of Deacon’s finger.“I promise to be yours,And to call you mine.I promise to be your love, your companion,And your sidekick.I promise to tell you every day how much I love you,You are the other half of my soul.I promise to be your lemon drizzle,Your butterscotch,And everything in between.I promise to be your best friend, beyond my last days. You are my hero and I love you.So much it hurts.”The rings had been engraved ‘Loving you is my life ¥’ and would forever bind them to each other.“Deacon Axel Reid, do you take Jenna Nina Bethan Rivera to be your lawfully wedded wife?”“I do.”“And do you, Jenna Nina Bethan Rivera take Deacon Axel Reid to be your lawfully wedded husband?”“I do.”Deacon and Jenna slid the rings onto each other’s fingers as the vicar spoke the words that would turn the page onto their next chapter together.“I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”Jenna and Deacon’s lips connected and they sealed a union that would last beyond their time on earth together as the entire town stood in celebration. When he could tear his lips from the woman who was his in every way physically and spiritually possible, Deacon whisked her away so she could sign her name, for the first time, as Mrs Jenna Reid.
***When the dinner had been eaten, the speeches had been made and the cake had been cut at The Haliwell Country Club that held the reception, the guests moved from the dinner hall to the dance hall for a night of drinking, dancing and celebrating love and life. The guests lined the dance floor as Deacon led Jenna in their first dance as a married couple. They had chosen ‘The Only Exception’ by Paramore and it was right for them. Deacon looked down at his wife as she stood settled into his embrace. He stroked the small of her back and leaned down to whisper in her ear as they disappeared into their familiar bubble and the other guest coupled up and joined them.
Esteban led Mindy to the floor and they danced slowly, holding each other as they always had.“She looks happy doesn’t she?” Esteban asked his wife of forty years.“She is happy.” His Welsh wife answered, looking into the brown eyes that he had passed down to their children, “No one will make her as happy as Deac. We’ve all known that for a long time. I’m just glad the game of cat and mouse ended when it did.”“The past can always be forgiven. What we do in our present, to make us better in our future, is what matters.”Mindy had heard him say that many times in their forty five years together. But she had never believed it as much as she did then as she looked around at their three children and their granddaughter, happy and smiling and together.Esteban’s knee buckled as he danced and with a frustrated groan, he let Mindy lead him back to their table to rest his aching body. He sat down heavily in the chair, his bones stiff, his brow knitted and misery in his voice. He couldn’t hide his anger at his aging body and he was powerless to stop time. It made him feel older with each passing day, and every second that seemed to thump in his foggy mind as they ticked by on the watch he’d worn since his younger days. Days when he had his whole life ahead of him, like the couple who had just joined in matrimony.
Emma Reid sat at the table with Esteban and Mindy and helped Phillipa with the colouring sheets that came in her bridal goodie bag. She liked playing with Phillipa; it reminded her of when her boys were younger and would ask her to draw pictures of cars and airplanes for them to colour. She let Phillipa colour on her own for a few minutes so she could take a sip of her wine and watch her youngest son dance with his wife. She came closer to losing him than any mother should. He had repercussions from his accident and dance with death. Deacon suffered from nightmares only abolished by the comfort and warmth of Jenna’s body next to his. They were bad dreams that mirrored what his father must have seen in the final moments of his life. His leg still hurt, although he would never tell anyone, and he had more pain in his neck in the morning than most woke up with when they’d slept awkwardly. She watched him, grateful to see the glint in his eyes that he lost for those five years that he was without Jenna. Emma smiled to herself, took another sip of wine and scanned the room for Bradley, her first-born. She hoped he was happy, even if he hadn’t found the same ending as his younger brother.
“Is this seat taken?” Bradley stopped at the table, empty except for Rachel, his ex-girlfriend, who was watching her parents. Her mother and father had been arguing a lot; the economy was starting to have an effect on Petals of Passion and they were struggling to make ends meet. The wedding had brought some money in and Rachel watched them, happy together for the first time in a long time. She said nothing in response, just kicked out the chair next to her for Bradley to sit down.“No date tonight?” He asked, lowering himself into the chair and trying not to look at the cleavage exposed by her low-cut dress.“No. But I’m surprised you don’t have one.”“Best man duties come first.”The atmosphere felt tense at the reference to his brother as they both remembered a time not so long ago.“Isn’t the best man supposed to sleep with one of the bridesmaids? I hear Abbie is lovely.”She tucked her hair behind her ear nervously.“Yeah, she’s nice. But that’s not happening.” Another silence hung over them. “Dance with me, Rach.”Rachel stood with Bradley and allowed him to lead her to the dance floor where they joined Jonas and Grace, and the other guests.
Things hadn’t been right between Jonas and Grace for a while. Jonas and Bradley were similar in more ways than just their age. They both had problems keeping girlfriends; problems that had nothing to do with what was on the inside or outside. The couple didn’t speak while they danced; they didn’t really speak much at all anymore. It was something they were going to have to talk about. Maybe they wouldn’t make it through Christmas together.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t fly us out tonight.” Deacon said, turning to Jenna and pressing a kiss to the top of her head. They had retired to a table, away from the attention. They had thanked their families and friends and people whose names they didn’t know for coming and Jenna was now wrapped in his suit jacket and leaned against him, ready to go home. The day had been more than they could have ever hoped for.“Jen.” Jade, the maid of honour addressed her sleepy sister and held out an envelope, “I’ve finished the collection.”Jenna shook her head and pushed the envelope back.“I don’t want to know.”They hadn’t asked for anything; hadn’t made a wedding gift list. They simply asked for a donation, a discretionary amount of money from their guests. They decided the money would go to the neuroscience research department at the university; specifically to the department that specialised in Traumatic brain injury. No amount of kitchen appliances or cellophane wrapped bubble bath would have brought Deacon back if he had lost his life the night of the crash.“Jen?” Deacon nudged her gently when Jade had returned to the party.“Hmm?”“I said I’m sorry.”“Don’t be.” She sat up and looked to him, “There isn’t anywhere I would rather be tonight than at home with you.”He kissed her on the lips, always amazed by how laid-back she was. He refused to think again of the time they had each other stressed out and strung up.“Can we go home now?” She continued, nodding towards the party on the dance floor, “I think this lot can keep going without us.”Deacon nodded and stood up, tucking his wife into his side. He would never tire of calling her his wife, never tire of the way her body fitted his like the last piece of his puzzle. They said quiet goodbyes to their parents and slipped out of the country club unnoticed.
