I absolutely loved it and I'm going against the grain here and rating this 5 stars just because I enjoyed it so much even though when I break the story down, it definitely has its flaws. However while I was reading it, I felt so interested, so engaged that the flaws didn't matter and that, to me is the sign it was absolutely a top book - because what really matters is that the experience is good (by contrast there are books where you know the author has technically done everything right but somehow it just doesn't hit the right note for you.)

I suppose the main thing that I wasn't a huge fan of was the cover - I read a copy that had a garish pink cover that hurt my eyes!

I've loved Sulari's interesting writing style and I was eager to read this book. One of the things I like about her writing is how she captures the flavour of an Australian novel (even though this is set in America). I can hear the Australians in it, unafraid of being themselves and not trying to sound "international" or "American".

In this story, Theo has decided to drop law school to become a novelist. Her lawyer brother encourages her to get out of the house so she goes out to write in a bar and meets up with another writer, Dan Murdoch. Dan is supportive, he's interested and he seems to be writing something about conspiracy theories though he keeps his book to himself. The two start a relationship and then ...

Yes, Dan is murdered. Theo becomes a suspect. And then it comes about that Dan may have had a private life that Theo didn't know about, one that seems a bit weird and shifty.

I've read criticisms that Theo was not an engaging character. To my mind she starts out as far more interesting, especially to writers. Later, she becomes a far more passive character and the story is about her being caught in a very difficult situation rather than what we're used to seeing nowadays where a woman would go out and solve all the problems and bring her opposition to justice. However for one, I think the feeling of being caught in a bad situation that grows worse and worse is one that could be easily related to. Next, the characterisation in the book shows many other active characters and I was interested in the entire cast so I wasn't overly bothered that Theo didn't take the most charge.

The story is about Carrie Soto, who finished her amazing tennis career as a world record holder, returning at the age of 37 to defend her title when it is threatened by Nicki Chan "The Beast". Carrie Soto was never a well-liked player, but she was extremely talented. Now she's back, without the advantages of youth.

The book is definitely one that will appeal mainly to those who love tennis. A lot of the book is devoted to Carrie's thoughts as she moves through Grand Slam matches, and the chapters are named after each match and describe the happenings of each match. The techniques used, the scores and so on.

Now, I have watched a bit of tennis and enjoyed it. I liked reading this. It would probably be awful if you didn't like tennis. On the other hand, I don't consider myself a "tennis nut" or expert by any stretch - I learned a lot about tennis training and culture reading this - and I still enjoyed it. The book is not just about describing tennis games and strategy. That is a structure for looking at the character development of Carrie Soto and her relationships with her father and several other key characters - Bowe Huntley, Nicki Chan and to some extent Gwen, being the main other characters in the book.

After the prologue we go back to when Carrie is inspired to take up tennis. She formed a special bon d with her father through tennis and he nurtured her to feel she was the very best - perhaps pushed her to feel that she was superior to the point that she grew obnoxious. It's a defining point of character.

She's driven, she's talented, but she'd not a people pleaser. She thinks that her being better is simply a truth that others have to deal with, and she's not very sympathetic to how they might deal with it. She has yet to come to the part of her life when she might have to deal with some quite uncomfortable truths herself and might appreciate kindness.

I felt Carrie was a very real character. She was someone locked into loneliness but didn't even realise what she was doing to herself. She was so focused on winning at tennis she could not see further and any attempts to explain other things to her were seen as attempts to ruin her wins.

How she would break out of this and grow, with people who could possibly understand her:

Her father, an ex-player who had always loved her; Bowe Huntley, another aging player who has more readily accepted his limitations; Nicki Chan, her rival; or Gwen, her agent

was a very interesting part of Carrie's development and the story. We could see how quick Carrie was to read small things such as her opponents moves on the court but slow to notice other things in relationships and her life.
