Alarie Tennille was born and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia with a genius older brother destined for NASA, a ghost, and a yard full of cats. Alarie graduated in the first coed class at the University of Virginia with a B.A. in English, Phi Beta Kappa key, and black belt in feminism. She met her husband, graphic artist Chris Purcell, in college. She still misses the ocean, but loves the writing community she’s found in Kansas City.

After a career ranging from technical editor to greeting card writer, Alarie is retired and has more time to focus on her poetry writing. She serves on the Emeritus Board of The Writers Place.

Alarie has three poetry collections published by Kelsay Books: Running Counterclockwise, Waking on the Moon, and Three A.M

I'm starting to see their work everywhere and am sure their prices have gone up now. The Atlanta Airport has an exhibit of their art.

Be Still by nadia arioli

I’m especially fond of ekphrastic poetry, poems based on art. However, these poems are very dark, so be wary of trigger warnings. The artist committed suicide. I had to take breaks to get through the entire book.

The Lost Child by Wesley McNair

I’m a fan of Wesley McNair’s poems. This is the fourth book I’ve read by him. He does a great job of capturing the human condition, which is an even harder thing to do when you’re writing about your family, friends, and neighbors. He balances his lif ...more

I haven’t read many Irish books, but I agree that Foster deserved to win the Davy Byrnes Award, “then the world’s richest prize for a story.” That’s all the better reason to run off to a bookstore or library and read it for yourself. The book is char ...more

I'm a big fan of Jojo Moyes. This is the ninth novel I've read by her. I was a bit daunted by the unhappiness and difficulties of a family that came apart at the seams. The mother, the lead protagonist, feels most of the pain. Her husband left her, t ...more

For me, the plot dragged along too much, especially for such a tragic event. I kept reading to try to keep the characters straight. Fortunately, the pace picked up near the end and became more likeable.

It's always gratifying to hear that. My husband decided he wants to read it after hearing me rave, too.

Alarie Jan wrote: "Thanks so much for the add, Alarie!"

I was actually surprised you weren't already in my contacts, Jan. I wanted to let you know I voted for your poem in the contest. Love it! But I think I said so in IHOP. I don't usually like to say so there for fear there's another member in the grouping that I didn't notice.

We have some pretty good overlap in reading tastes, so I'm sure I'll get some ideas from you.
