If aliens ever do land on Earth, Kelly will not be prepared, despite having read over a hundred stories of the apocalypse. Still, she will pack her precious books into a box and carry them with her as she strives to survive. It’s what bibliophiles do.

Kelly is the author of twelve novels–including the Chaos Station series, co-written with Jenn Burke–and several novellas and short stories. Some of what she writes is speculative in nature, but mostly it’s just about a guy losing his socks and/or burning dinner. Because life isn’t all conquering aliens and mountain peaks. Sometimes finding a happy ever after is all the adventure we need.

Two characters visit more often than the rest, though, and they are Max from BLOCK AND STRIKE and Brian from CHASING FOREVER.

I think Max visits because I've often thought his story (his and Jake's story) is unfinished. He's still quite young at the end of the book (barely 22) and he and Jake have a lot of living and loving yet to do before they get settled. Also, Max is a character I wanted to write for a long time before I did so. He also has a lot of personal stuff going on inside his head and life that was stuff that I had going on inside my head. He's probably one of my most personal characters.

Brian visits because that's just who he is. He inserts himself into people's lives and becomes a fixture. He's brash, annoying, loves himself a bit too much - and somewhat insecure, totally sweet on the inside, and unpredictably loveable. I'd never written anyone like him when I decided that Brian needed a book, and I don't know if I'll ever write another character like him again. He's unique in my now broad cast of characters. And his story is heavier and perhaps more tragic than the others, so I like to keep him close. <3

Speaking of heavy and tragic stories, Felix (CHAOS STATION) used to visit me a lot, but he and Zed had such a solid happy ever after that he's pretty settled in my mind these days!

I'll sometimes have an idea of the sort of story I want to tell, but it's when I start populating my worlds - whether they are airless planets in alternate universes or simply the town next door - that the plot begins to take shape. It's always about what my characters need. My settings are designed to support their stories.

I have several ideas I'd like to explore next, ranging from contemporary to fantasy to science fiction - and even a couple of complete departures from what I usually write. I'm waiting for the loudest voice to capture my attention, then I'll start asking that voice what they really want, and so a new story will begin. In the meantime, I'm plotting an epilogue novella to the THIS TIME FOREVER series. It will be set on the day of Frank and Tom's wedding, and everyone is in attendance. Well, everyone except Tom. As Frank searches the newly renovated Bossen Hill resort looking for him, we'll visit with Mal, Brian, Simon, & Charlie.
