Wringing her hands, Lilah turned back to them. “I’m going to be murdered. I can tell.”
“Why do you think that?” Diesel patted the table in front of her chair. “Come back and talk to us.”
“I’m thinking about the ways I could die,” she said as she retook her seat, “and the list is short. It could be suicide, accident, or murder. I’m excluding illness and old age.”
“What about war?” asked Twenty-Six.
“Or natural disaster?” added Twenty-Eight.
“Good catches, but I’ll exclude them as well,” said Lilah.
Diesel detected sarcasm and figured that if he heard it, his brothers certainly did.

Words I wrote for new time-travel book BUMP TIME due out in the spring!
Rose lowered herself into the chair. As she did, she felt Diesel’s eyes trace down her body. Two years older than he, and wearing shorts and a scoop top, his scrutiny didn’t surprise her. Still, she caught his eye and held it, scolding him with her expression. He blushed so red she thought he would pop.
“I know you as a precocious three-year old,” he stammered, “and I’m trying to relate that little girl to who you are now. I sort of see it in the mouth and chin. Your hairline, I guess. But that’s about it.”
She didn’t have any specific memories of life at three years old, at best perhaps a hazy sensation of feeling loved and safe. She softened her expression and winked at him.

He came out wearing a green T-shirt and blue jeans. “Hi, Lilah,” he said, “Please call me Twenty-Six.”
Lilah shook her head. “I know you’re Twenty-Five, Einstein. The display gives it away. Your first words to me are a lie.”
He stopped and swore under his breath. “I screwed up. Yes, I’m Twenty-Five, but in seven days I become Twenty-Six. You’ll know me more at that age than this one, so I wanted to make it easy and skip the ‘my name’s changed’ routine a week from now. Please forgive me.”
“Well,” she said, regretting her aggressive tone. “It’s just best to be straight with me.”

“I have an idea for an experiment to help us find the right balance,” said Ciopova. “Would you enable the T-box? We can run the test in just a few moments.”
Nodding, Lilah walked to the aluminum-clad device and tugged on the door latch. “What do you have in mind?”
“Let’s try a decluttering broadcast.”
“I don’t know what that is.” Lilah stepped into the coffin-sized booth and woke the machine.
“It’s a way of eliminating unnecessary debris.” As she spoke, Ciopova directed the T-box to pulse an energy field. Lilah’s brain heated to boiling in an instant. Her lifeless body collapsed in place.

She imagined him knowing her locker number in high school or some other obscure but obtainable fact. “Dazzle me,” she called down.
“That tiny broken heart you have tattooed on your ankle? You told your friends it was because of Manny Rider. But it was really because of your dad.”
“Yeah? What do you know about it?”
“You were twelve the last time he hugged you, then he shipped out to the Middle East. He did three tours back to back, and when he came home, he was a different man. They took your dad from you and it broke your heart.”
“Whoa. How could you know that?” Her hands went to her stomach as her gut wrenched from the memory.
