Summer is when I try to binge on fiction. We were on the road for a while and that didn't leave a lot of time to read, but I inhaled Colum McCann (Transatlantic) and T.C. Boyle (Talk Talk) novels. Then my son, Vaughn, was assigned to read Treasure Island for eighth grade this fall, and he loved it so much that I picked it up. It was first published in 1883, so ye olde English takes some time to get used to, but the book is fun and fast-paced and it was supreme escapism there inside the world of pirates like ol' Israel Hands: "Well, now I tell you, I never seen good come o' goodness yet. Him as strikes first is my fancy; dead men don't bite; them's my views—amen, so be it."
There's still a month left in summer. Who wants to recommend a great read?
