Beryl Bainbridge
“A man bears the weight of his own body without knowing it, but he soon feels the weight of any other object. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, that a man cannot forget- but not himself.”
― Beryl Bainbridge, Every Man for Himself

Michael Ondaatje
“For we live with those retrievals from childhood that coalesce and echo throughout our lives, the way shattered pieces of glass in a kaleidoscope reappear in new forms and are songlike in their refrains and rhymes, making up a single monologue. We live permanently in the recurrence of our own stories, whatever story we tell.”
― Michael Ondaatje, Divisadero

Cormac McCarthy
“Where men can't live gods fare no better.”
― Cormac McCarthy, The Road

Chester Himes
“It seemed so illogical to punish some poor criminal for doing something that civilization taught him how to do so he could have something that civilization taught him how to want. It seemed to him as wrong as if they had hung the gun that shot the man.”
― Chester Himes, Yesterday Will Make You Cry

Jane Bowles
“True enough,” said Mrs. Copperfield, bringing her fist down on the table and looking very mean. “I have gone to pieces, which is a thing I’ve wanted to do for years. I know I am as guilty as I can be, but I have my happiness, which I guard like a wolf, and I have authority now and a certain amount of daring, which, if you remember correctly, I never had before.”
― Jane Bowles, Two Serious Ladies

James Barker Quirkyreader wrote: "What did you think of "The Professor"?"

I didn't enjoy it... it seemed quite lifeless. Apparently it was rejected by publishers first time round and the author was told to submit something that was more of a potboiler- hence the writing of Jane Eyre!
