I grew up in the San Francisco area. My grandfather was in the cotton business, and he ended up stuffing all the Simmons mattresses with cotton. My uncle was the mayor of San Rafael. My father was a professional drummer, and won the handball tournament at age 50, which was unheard of.

I have a deep interest in the human mind so I wanted a doctorate in psychology. I also loved singing and I sang with my step-father since I was seven years old. I had a very close relationship with my sister who died very young from cancer. She told me on her death bed that she wanted me to make two promises to her.
