Are truly happy people unambitious?

David S. Rose

You are asking two different questions here. The main question asks about “truly happy people” and whether they are unambitious. But the question in the details asked about “people with low ambitions” and whether they are happy.

That’s like the difference between the questions: “Do all dogs have ears?” and “Is everything that has ears a dog?”

While I can’t answer the question about unambitious people, I can at least partially answer the question about happy people…because I am one. And no, not all truly happy people are unambitious, because I’m an example that proves the negative: I’m truly happy, and relatively ambitious.

Are emotions like anger, happiness and sadness a choice?

David S. Rose

No. While there are certainly things one can do to modify one’s emotions, for a great many people (if not most), baseline emotions are out of their control. People who suffer from Depression cannot simply “control” their feelings, just like people who are naturally happy and upbeat (like me) cannot control that feeling either.

What should I learn to be an entrepreneur or to start a startup?

David S. Rose

As Salina Mendoza has answered, you need to find your passion, and then see if that passion includes devoting your life to imagining, creating and running a business. Being an entrepreneur isn't a career that one sets out to pursue, like being a lawyer or accountant or architect. Rather, it is something innate, that results in a compulsive passion to start a business.

The best entrepreneurs then learn to harness that energy and passion, and apply it to all the technical steps that are necessary to found a successful startup.

I'm going to suggest three books for you to read to understand what this Entrepreneurship stuff is all about. None are very long or complicated, and I'd suggest reading them in this sequence:

The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber [image error][image error]

This classic book will help you understand the difference between working in a startup, and actually founding one as an entrepreneur.

2. Lucky Or Smart?: Fifty Pages for the First-Time Entrepreneur, by Bo Peabody

[image error][image error]

This short, quick-to-read book by one of the very early Internet pioneers in the dotcom boom will give you a great personal view from someone in your shoes (and possibly your age) who found himself almost accidentally a big-time entrepreneur. It's definitely worth the read.

Finally, although it's a bit of conflict of interest, I strongly suggest you read:

3. The Startup Checklist: 25 Steps to a Scalable, High-Growth Business by David S. Rose

[image error][image error]

Yup, it's by me, so take the recommendation with a grain of salt. That said, I wrote the book to be the step-by-step guide for entrepreneurs to founding a real startup. If Gerber is the “why”, and Peabody is the “what”, my book is very much the “how”. It requires no prior knowledge about entrepreneurship, and walks you through the specific things that are involved in founding a startup. Once you decided to take the plunge, it should be your always-at-hand checklist of what to do next, and how to do it.

Good luck as you consider your future!

Why does the NYPD 1st Precinct have the words "FOVRTH PRECINCT" written on it?

David S. Rose

Because it was originally the Fourth police precinct station, and an affectation of Neo-Renaissance architecture was to substitute “V” for “U”, which in turn derived from Roman inscriptions because back in the days of the Roman Empire the letter “U” hadn’t yet been developed.

The 3-story Neo-Renaissance building was originally the Fourth Police Precinct Station House (now First). It was completed in 1912, and designed by Hoppin & Koen, who designed several police building in New York. The carved inscription on the north face still reads "Fourth Precinct Police Station". It is clad in buff-colored cast stone on the facades, and yellow iron-spot brick on the west elevation. The horizontal emphasis of the design created by the high water table, the stringcourse above the 2nd floor, and the modillioned cornice, as well as corner quoins and swag plaques contribute to the building's Renaissance-inspired image.

Three of four original cast-iron lanterns held on brackets remain in place beside the two entrances on Ericsson Place which are set in 2-story arched surrounds. The entrance on Varick Street was originally an entrance for motor vehicles to an internal garage which was extended later into the central open court. The 2-story wing on the southern end was originally a stable, which the 1st Precinct continues to use for its mounted units.

Where can I hire agents to contact domain owners to buy their domains?

David S. Rose

There are quite a few domain brokers who offer these services. The most reputable (and largest, and most expensive) is MarkMonitor.com: Brand Protection and Domain Management.

How much does it cost to found a company?

David S. Rose

It depends on what you mean by “found”.

If you are talking about the simple act of incorporating a US company in Delaware, the total cost is $89.

If you are talking about everything it takes for a business to get up and operating, in 2009 the Kauffman Foundation estimated the cost at $30,000.

If you're talking about the basic formation, administrative, legal and tax stuff required to correctly set up a company that is planning to grow big with outside capital and equity-compensated employees, then it's somewhere in the $500$5,000 range depending on how you go about doing it.

Can we raise an Angel round using cash as opposed to checks or wires?

David S. Rose

There is nothing illegal about it per se, and you are not likely covered by either Sarbanes-Oxley or Anti-Money Laundering regulations,so I doubt if you could get in trouble simply by accepting the cash, but I’ve got a very strong feeling that…

THIS. IS. A. BAD. IDEA.

I have no idea who this person is, but in 2016 anyone insisting on cash for large transactions is (choose one or more):

Laundering moneyCheating on their taxesHiding assets from their spouse

NONE of these is a good thing, and ANY of them can open you up to a hornets nest of troubles, even if you are totally clean yourself.
