** For the past 20 years, I have developed a career working in an empowerment theory based, community non-profit organization whose mission is to serve anyone affected by domestic violence.

I am an International Expert on Education and Prevention of Domestic Violence and all forms of violence against women. I choose to work with people who self-identify as a victim/survivor/thriver of domestic violence and/or any form of violence. This has happened in my life, too, as I self-identify as a survivor/thriver. Using empowering and mentoring skills building, we will work through our issues together!

My life is framed by my experiences and education; and my perspective is formed by my family, friends, and community. Born in South Dakota to working class parents, my older brother and I had a fairytale family life and childhood, growing up in a large extended family. My parents had traditional values. With two blue-collar, hardworking parents, I grew up in a rural Midwestern small town. I actually lived in the house with a white picket fence! I never planned for my life to turn out the way it has.

25 years ago, I was a broken-hearted and depressed mom with four teenagers. I found myself isolated in an abusive marriage with an abuser who was expert at manipulation, and mothering four children -- ages 15, 13, 12, and 10. I had no job, no income, no car, and was living in a house with a mortgage payment of $1000 per month. After I severed the relationship, fighting for survival, I emerged as a full-time, post-secondary student at the same time my fourth child was entering his college years. (In fact, we both received our bachelor degrees in 2003! I am so proud of both of us.)

Despite the overwhelming odds stacked against me, I have worked my way through the dark days of trauma to living a joy- filled life! I have gained graduate level education while developing my career, which is motivated by my passion to prevent and/or eliminate not only domestic violence but all forms of violence.

Education took me to a place of praxis -- deep thought, reflection, and action -- freeing my feminist identity to speak. As an Atlanta (Georgia) Semester: Women, Leadership, and Social Change Program student in 2001, I interned at the National Center for Human Rights Education where I researched human rights. My work was to develop educational Fact Sheets on the intersection of human rights with following subjects: domestic violence, racism, environmental justice, and disability. While working full-time, my undergraduate and graduate study of the academic disciplines of gender, culture, and history (Interdisciplinary Studies) and some fundamental theories have inspired me to break the deafening silence that weds cultural discourses, social practices, and gendered expectations of survivors of domestic violence.

I have been working in the field of anti-domestic violence for 25+ years, as an advocate for other survivors starting as volunteer… moving to support group facilitator, hotline advocate, and shelter staff.
