Past Due Edition – Mike’s Metal Monday: Desert Plains by Judas Priest

Okay, I’ve been sick. Not many posts as of late.  Sorry about that.  But, since I heard of the passing of drummer Dave Holland, I had to post.  No matter what he did to fall from grace, he was a damn fine drummer for his day.  This song is possibly my all-time favorite metal song…as in my ultimate favorite.  Especially the live version.  So here it is.

These are the 0.99 cent Books I Know…How About You!

Let’s be honest, 99 cents for a book is CHEAP!  There are a lot of good authors out there struggling to get their name out there.  Many lower the price of their ebooks to the minimum allowed that isn’t free. So I try to help out by promoting.

All my books, and a lot of my author friends books are just 0.99 cents.  Below are a few of them.  Are yours for sale on the cheap?  If so, add a link to the comments!!!

Let’s promote together!

THE EXILED is back — WILLIAM MEIKLE

Unsolicited promotion; because that’s how I roll.

When people ask me what’s my favorite of the books I’ve written, this one often comes to mind. There’s a lot of me in this one; it’s Scottish, it’s set in Edinburgh and rural Scotland, and there’s a particuarly Scottish flavor to the people and the dialogue. It’s one of those books where I said […]

Little Writer… — Through The Gateway

A thought provoking blog entry from my friend over at Through The Gateway.  Writing takes as long as it takes, so don’t sweat it!

It’s been a while since I actually got over to this blog to write anything. Christmas break with several children to entertain kept me from having very much (if any) time to myself. Then the New Year hit and the temperature dropped to a level so low that my brain was forced into hibernation. At […]

Album of the Day: Hamferð, “Támsins Likam” — Bandcamp Daily

Actually, this is a pretty good album.

The Faroese six-piece present metal’s obligatory preoccupation with dying in a light we rarely see it, finding melodrama, romance, and—yes—beauty in mortality.

Book Review: The Ocean At Ahe End Af Ahe Lane by Neil Gaiman

Description:

UK National Book Awards 2013 “Book of the Year”

“Fantasy of the very best.” Wall Street Journal

A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother. He hasn’t thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she’d claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse where she once lived, the unremembered past comes flooding back. And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to anyone, let alone a small boy.

A groundbreaking work as delicate as a butterfly’s wing and as menacing as a knife in the dark, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is told with a rare understanding of all that makes us human, and shows the power of stories to reveal and shelter us from the darkness inside and out.

“[Gaiman’s] mind is a dark fathomless ocean, and every time I sink into it, this world fades, replaced by one far more terrible and beautiful in which I will happily drown.” New York Times Book Review

Review:

I will admit, I am a mediocre fan of Gaiman.  Some of his books I really like, while others I don’t.  I may be in the minority; I didn’t really like American Gods.  But, there is something about his writing that makes me keep giving it a chance.  So, here I am, just finished with another of his stories.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane was a very entertaining read.  I liked it.  The flow was good, the story was interesting, and I liked the characters.  Gaiman is very good at twists.  Nothing is as it seems in his stories; maybe that is why I keep coming back.  This book is no exception.

It was a fairly quick read, and it kept me engrossed.  I got through it quickly, and was even a bit sad at the ending.  It didn’t end as I hoped or expected, and it was over before I liked.

Nicely done.  Highly recommended.

Ocean themed haiku wanted … — purehaiku

Only 2 more days until the deadline!

I am looking for haiku that capture a single, vivid image in words. I like snapshots frozen in time, conjuring something visual or audible or tactile that can be conveyed to the reader in just 17 syllables. I like haiku that use the English language in an interesting way and that include juxtaposition and/or contrasts, […]

NIGHT OF THE WENDIGO is back. — WILLIAM MEIKLE

This one looks to be right up my alley; may need to check it out!  Maybe you should too.

My novel, NIGHT OF THE WENDIGO, is rereleased today in a new ebook edition from Crossroad Press. Formerly at DarkFuse, it picked up some great reviews back in its first release, and I’m hoping it’s going to get a new audience with this new edition. Updates…

Wow, what a rough winter in my family.

Everyone has been sick.  Currently, I’m rebounding.  I feel like I’ve missed weeks, though it’s only been a few days.  Such is life.

But, I’m back, sort of.  I hope to get caught up on my blogging, as I really do miss it.

Anyway, reviews coming, and I hope to get back to my version of normal soon.

Later!
