Attic Whispers from The Blue Mountains
Greetings from my attic in the Blue Mountains, my friends!
A lot has happened since the last Newsletter!
After several weeks of extensive travel, which has taken us from Athens all the way to Barcelona and then north to Bavaria and Austria, the Grand European Literary Tour has come to an end, and concluded with a wonderful farewell in Vienna. This journey has been a great adventure that, in many ways, surpassed expectations.
Meeting readers in the stunning Hofburg Library in Vienna, where a lot or research was carried out over the years
Needless to say, this was in no small way due to the generosity and warm welcome extended by my readers throughout Europe, and it was this that made the trip so special.
Frankly, I didn’t expect such an enthusiastic reception and was pleasantly surprised by how popular and widely read the Jack Rogan Mysteries series is in Europe. Book clubs, libraries, and reading groups in schools and universities have significantly contributed to this, adding a personal touch to the journey that I will remember for a long time to come. In short, Europe seems to have embraced Jack Rogan and his eclectic friends!
As you know, one of the main aims of this ‘literary anniversary tour’ was to revisit some of the key locations featured in the series, and share this experience with my readers. Those of you who have followed my journey on social media, especially Facebook, would have seen the many photos and travel stories I have posted along the way. If you haven’t already visited my Facebook page, I invite you to do so now, as it provides a great pictorial overview of this travel adventure.
In any case, here are a few highlights:
Meeting Italian readers in front of the Doge’s Palace in Venice
Bernini’s Fountain; Piazza Navona; Rome
I nside the Pope’s Palace in Avignon, France
Talking to readers in Salzburg, Austria
Jack Rogan’s next adventure: An update
Historic Osaka Castle which features prominently in the next book
I am pleased to tell you that the next book is making excellent progress. Since my return from Europe, I have been able to lock myself away in my attic up here in the Blue Mountains, and, inspired and refreshed, focus on WRITING!
What I found particularly encouraging about the subject matter and setting of the storyline, which, as you know, is set in Japan, was the great interest it has generated since its announcement.
Because Japanese culture and history are complex and not widely known in the West, the research required to give the book the authenticity it deserves is very demanding and necessitates the involvement of experts in both, Australia and Japan.
In short, writing this book has become a significant challenge, which I am confident will result in something truly special when it finally reaches the bookshelves.
So, please be patient. I am sure that the end result will make it all worthwhile.
I have already made arrangements for an extensive research trip to Japan to revisit some of the iconic locations featured, and perhaps even host a book launch in a historic castle surrounded by samurai memorabilia. How does that sound? Exciting stuff; right?
No doubt, this will be another literary adventure we’ll share in the hope that it will enhance your reading experience and add to the enjoyment of the book. As you know, I strongly believe in the interaction between author, and reader.
In that regard, I will shortly reveal the title of the book (which is still under consideration) and share more tidbits about the fascinating characters and storylines that will, hopefully make Jack’s next adventure a nail-biting experience. I will even include a chapter or two to pique your interest along the way and share a few adventure-gems to create anticipation. What do you think?
Finally, a small request … Please keep opening my emails and stay in touch. All good things take time, and true creativity cannot be rushed. This is not ‘fast food literature’ but, hopefully, a literary feast to be savoured by valued ‘thinking readers,’ just like you. Say, sitting in your favourite chair by the fire on a rainy day with your dog at your feet, letting your imagination run free … Get my meaning?
Sincerely, Gabriel Farago

Greetings from Venice, my friends!
The Grand European Literary Anniversary Tour; so far After leaving Greece and sailing along the stunning Dalmatian coastline visiting Corfu, Kotor, Dubrovnik and Split, we have arrived in one of our iconic destinations: Venice. Because Venice features in several of my books and its history and people play such an important part in the stoylines, we will spend 3 days exploring this enchanting city.
DAY 1
“At the pier, you will join a leisurely cruise, passing magnificent waterside palazzos and piazzas and peering down the lapping, narrow canals that weave their way into the city’s medieval corridors. Disembark at the landing pontoon next to Palazzo Cornoldi, then set off on foot with your guide to the beautiful St. Mark’s Square, crossing the four elegant bridges that link the waterfront. Admire the views of the splendid Gothic-Byzantine St. Mark’s Basilica and its grand Campanile bell tower and see the Doge’s Palace and other nearby attractions. Napoleon Bonaparte allegedly referred to Piazza San Marco as “the drawing room of Europe,” cementing its reputation as one of the world’s most stunning squares.”
DAY 2
“At Santa Lucia, you will meet your knowledgeable guide and set out through the streets of this renowned city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire the fine collection of works by the Mannerist painter Tintoretto that are on display at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, then pass by the 13th-century Gothic-style Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari at Campo dei Frari. Explore Rialto and its colorful canal-side markets and enjoy a typical Venetian aperitif before continuing on your way through the labyrinth of streets to the elegant Scala del Bovolo, best known for its external multi-arch spiral staircase. Cap your tour in picturesque St. Mark’s Square—home to its famed basilica, the Campanile and Doge’s Palace.”
DAY 3
“Discover two of Venice’s most beautiful outlying islands and linger in one of Europe’s most beautiful squares.
Meet your local guide and take a leisurely cruise along the Giudecca Canal, passing St. Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace. Dock at the island of Murano, nicknamed “Island of the Flames”; all of Venice’s glassmaking was moved here in 1291 to reduce the risk of fires in the city. You will visit one of the leading glass manufacturers and witness a master craftsman at work. On Burano, a charming island lined with brightly colored houses, learn about Venice’s lace-making industry and stroll along quaint cobblestone streets.”
The beauty and gripping magic of Venice is difficult to put into words. I have tried to capture some of it by setting several Jack Rogan mysteries in this extraordinary city and viewing it through the eyes of my characters and the artistic lens of my imagination.
I hope that by adopting this approach, it has been possible to share at least some of its living history with my readers in a way that is both realistic and entertaining.

Greetings from Dubrovnik, Croatia, my friends!
The Grand European Literary Anniversary Tour
As you know, travel is an integral part of how I write about, and research, the many destinations woven into the storylines and the lives of the characters featured in my work. I believe that first-hand experiences are vital for authenticity, and without authenticity, fact and fiction cannot coexist in a way that is both realistic and entertaining without stretching the imagination too far.Because I am touring through Europe for the next two months and you are coming with me, I have decided to make travel the focus of our newsletters for the time being. This will allow me to share my journey and, hopefully, some adventures with you, and entertain you along the way.Unfortunately it will not be possible to share all the places I intend to visit with you. A newsletter format will not allow that. What I will do instead is select some of the highlights of the journey and feature them here. The journey so farAfter a long flight from Sydney via Abu Dhabi, we began our grand tour of Europe in Athens, in many ways one of the cradles of Western civilisation. Most appropriate, don’t you think? A whole day was spent exploring the Acropolis, followed by a visit to the stunning Acropolis Museum; always a favourite full of inspiration for storyline ‘twist’ and surprises to take back home to the attic. After a few wonderful days in Athens, we continued our journey through Greece to Olympia, the site of the first Olympiad.
To make this experience as realistic as possible, allow me to be your guide:
“Drive into the breathtaking fertile valleys of the western Peloponnese, passing olive groves, vineyards and orchards. On a spectacular mountain plain in the shadow of Mt. Kronos, walk among the remains of the first Olympic Park, established in 776 BC. See the Temple of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and once home to a gold-and-ivory statue of the Greek god. Admire the Temple of Hera and circular Philippeion temple. Marvel at the stadium, the largest of its day with a capacity of 45,000 spectators.
Afterward, visit the Olympia Archaeological Museum and its remarkable collection, including the stone head of Hera; or explore Modern Olympia along the way.”
Well, my friends, I did all that and more. Next stop: Corfu.
A day tour of Corfu:
“With a local guide, you will drive to Kanoni, a wonderful vantage point for photos of tiny Pontikonisi Island, or Mouse Island, and the Vlacherna Monastery. Pass the archaeological site of Paleopolis and the gates of the late Georgian Mon Repos Villa, once a residence of the Greek Royal Family and the birthplace of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Past Garitsa Bay, you will reach Corfu’s Old Town. Enjoy a guided stroll down the famous Esplanade, one of Europe’s largest public squares; elegant Liston promenade, once reserved for aristocracy; the Old Fortress; Durrell Gardens; and the Palace of St. Michael and St. George, former residence of the British High Commissioner.”
After a wonderful day in Corfu came a breathtaking experience: a visit to Dubrovnik in Croatia
“George Bernard Shaw famously called it “paradise on earth,” and you will see why during a visit to the Old Town district. Meet your guide and transfer by motor coach to the heart of the city; witness its beauty up close as you enter the cobblestoned Old Town on foot through the historic Pile Gate. Follow the Stradun—the marbled main pedestrian way that gleams from centuries of footsteps—to the Dominican Monastery, where you can view a fine collection of Renaissance paintings. You will also pass the Sponza Palace, the Church of St. Blaise and the 15th-century Onofrio’s Fountain, and much, much more.”
My readers keep telling me that my writing is very ‘visual’ in that the locations featured in the books are not only authentic, but are presented in a realistic way that allows the reader to share the experience and ‘be present’ in the moment. The only way to do this effectively through words, is to have actually experienced the locations firsthand and that, my friends, is what travel is all about.
I hope you are enjoying being part of my Grand European Literary Anniversary Tour. We still have a long way to go, and much to see. Promise!
Warmest regards,
Sincerely, Gabriel Farago Here are links to my books. Have you read them all?

The new book
Progress Report:
Writing a new book is always a challenge, but researching the latest Jack Rogan adventure, which, as you know, is set in Japan, has been particularly demanding due to the massive amount of source material involved.
The many historical aspects, in particular, have required countless hours of meticulous research, as accuracy and authenticity are paramount. That said, for me, one of the most satisfying aspects of writing is the joy of learning and honing the skills of transporting my readers into hidden corners of my imagination, where fact and fiction rub shoulders in a way that makes it difficult to tell them apart.
Because Japanese culture is so multi-faceted and unique, it has been possible to incorporate some fascinating action settings and historical material into the storyline, which I am sure you will find interesting and enjoy. Here are a few examples of what you can expect:
History and customs of the samurai;
Rituals of the mysterious Sohei, the warrior monks,
Cultural significance of Sumo wrestling;
History and social impact of the notorious tattooed Yakuza;
Historic battle scenes, such as the Battle of Segikahara, and much, much more.
As you can see, a fascinating kaleidoscope of exotic settings and nail-biting adventures await with only one aim in mind: to entertain you!
I will share a lot more about Jack’s new epic adventures in upcoming newsletters with you as we approach publication. This will include a title and book cover reveal, chapter excerpts, and many more exciting aspects of this thrilling novel. So, please make sure you open my emails because I don’t want you to miss out!
Every week, I receive dozens of emails from dedicated readers, providing valuable feedback, observations, and suggestions about various aspects of my writing. Most days, I set time aside in the morning to reply to these emails and engage with my readers because they all deserve a prompt reply.
These exchanges can be very rewarding in an environment like mine, dominated by solitary endeavours like research and writing.
However, every now and then, a comment or little note stand out and light up my attic. Here’s one of them I just had to share with you:
“Gabriel
So, besides being a masterful storyteller, it has become apparent you are also the master of understatement. You mentioned in your last e-mail that “you’re in for quite a ride”, with the Final Quest book. What you failed to mention, was the fact that it was a no holds barred, bare knuckled, knock down, drag out, Katy bar the door, barn burning, hell of a ride!
I was going to suggest you are in the same writer’s class as Baldacci, Penny, Silva, etc., and now must confess you are in a class of your own. As an avid reader as well as one who does not” suffer fools gladly”, I’m just gobsmacked.
I’ll be starting The Curious Case of The Missing Head, and am wondering what rabbit you’ll be pulling out of your hat this time.
Warm Regards,
Doug”
Thank you for your kind words, Doug. It’s dedicated readers like you who make it all worthwhile!
And that’s why I’ve decided to make you my ‘Reader of the Month.” Congratulations!
Grand European literary anniversary tour
As this is a very special year for me, I have decided to take us all on a grand European adventure tour to visit many of the iconic locations featured in the Jack Rogan Mysteries.
Why is this year so special? I’ll tell you. It has been 20 years since I decided to step back from practicing law, and began writing full-time! Quite a milestone, don’t you think? Definitely something to celebrate and the best way to do that, is to TRAVEL!
We will begin our journey in Athens and visit the stunning Acropolis, and the fabulous Acropolis Museum. Definitely the right place to start a grand tour of Europe. Don’t you think?
Acropolis Museum
Museums and archaeological sites are two of my favourite places of inspiration where it is possible to connect with the past and let the imagination run free. And imagination is the very essence of creativity that allows a writer to shape characters and situations in ways that are both entertaining and instructive, and most important of all, tease the intellect. And that, my friends, is exactly what an exciting thriller should be able to do.
After Athens, we will continue our journey to Olympia and then along the Dalmatian coast all the way to Venice, one of our main attractions along the way.
But wait, this is just the beginning. How does Pompei, Rome, Pisa and Florence sound? We will visit them all. So please make sure you open my emails because the best is yet to come!

I am pleased to tell you, my friends, that the book launch in Tahiti in June last year has had a significant impact not only in New Zealand, which was expected, but also in France, which was a surprise.
Book sales and reviews have increased significantly since the book launch, and because French Polynesia’s close connection to France, the popularity of The Bone Scraper Legacy, and by implication, the Jack Rogan Mysteries series, in Europe has in many ways surpassed expectations. The series now has a truly global reach which I hope will be further enhanced by my upcoming European tour in April. But more of this later.

I will tell you all about this in the segment below.
The next book. Book 9 in the Jack Rogan Mysteries Series is on its way!
You will be pleased to hear that excellent progress has been made in both, researching, and writing the next book. Because Jack’s new adventure is set in Japan and involves delving deep into Japanese history and culture, the research has been very challenging.
That said, it has also been most enjoyable and satisfying. Suffice it to say, you are in for a fabulous, nail-biting ride through the the mysterious world of the legendary Samurai,
the powerful Shoguns and their many wars,
Sumo wrestlers,
warrior-monks , the mysterious sohei,

This will be an excellent opportunity to revisit such exciting cities as Venice, Florence and Rome, and refresh impressions of these iconic places all of you familiar with the series will associate with certain characters and storylines featured in various books.

Attic Whispers from the Blue Mountains
[January 2025 Edition]
New Year’s Greetings from the Blue Mountains!
I would like to begin by wishing you all a very Happy New Year, and may peace finally descend on our troubled world.
Here in Australia, we celebrated New Year’s Eve with spectacular fireworks on Sydney Harbour and a wonderful feeling of optimism and hope for a better future.
Thanks to your encouragement and support, we can look back on 2024 with satisfaction and pride because a great deal has been achieved. The Bone Scraper Legacy and Murder on the Ghan have received two major literary awards each, which gave the novellas worldwide exposure and recognition.
The release of the new edition of The Empress Holds the Key was exceptionally well received, which is reflected in the many enthusiastic reviews posted by readers from as far away as Iceland and Argentina. For a writer like me, there cannot be a greater reward than this.
The new book launch video has been particularly popular and was viewed several thousand times on Facebook alone. If you haven’t seen it yet, here it is:
For me, the beginning of a new year is always an exciting time. It is a time for planning and looking forward to new literary challenges and adventures. And I can tell you, my friends, that we have some thrilling things planned this year. Curious? I’m sure you are!
To begin with, many of you will be pleased to hear that I did some extensive research last year, preparing the framework for another novel – book nine – in The Jack Rogan Mysteries Series.
This time, Jack and his intrepid friends will take you to Japan on an epic adventure that will reach back in time and explore Japan’s fascinating history and culture that are not well known in the West. This alone will add an exotic touch to the storyline, which I am sure you will find spellbinding.
My interest in Japanese culture and history began many years ago. To experience them firsthand, I went on an extensive walking tour – the historic Nakasendo Way – an ancient trading route from Kyoto to Tokyo. The best way to experience a foreign land, meet the locals, and become part of their daily lives is on foot and stepping into their homes.
To pique your interest, I will share more insights and behind-the-scenes stories of the new book with you in due course. So please stay tuned!
I have done this many times in different parts of the world with my trusty notebook, never far away…
The impressions and ideas collected along the way provide the inspiration and authenticity for the characters and stories I try to weave into my work, thereby creating a canvas of imagination where fact and fiction rub shoulders and the reader is never quite sure where one ends and the other begins. This has become a hallmark of my work.
Writing the next book up here in the attic will not be the only thing I will share with you this year. In April, we’ll embark on an exciting journey that will take us to some of the iconic locations and settings featured in The Jack Rogan Mysteries Series.
These locations will include Athens, Venice, Rome, Florence, Salzburg, Berchtesgaden and Vienna, to name just a few. Along the way, we’ll meet local readers in libraries and book clubs and address them on radio and during interviews. Interested? I bet you are.
I will tell you more about this trip in the next newsletter, so please make sure that you open my emails and become part of this adventure. I would hate you to miss out!

Attic Whispers from the Blue Mountains
[October 2024 Edition]
Greetings from the Attic !
Leura Spring Garden
Spring has arrived up here in the Blue Mountains in all its colourful glory. This is one of my favourite times of the year. It is a time of rejuvenation, inspiration, and reward for all the effort to maintain a garden of this size and variety. Here, let me show you:
Something exciting to share
You will remember that in the last edition, we talked about the exotic book launch of The Bone Scraper Legay in Tahiti. Well, on my return, something exciting was waiting for me back home in Australia: a major international literary award!
The Bone Scraper Legacy had just won a gold medal in the International Readers’ Favorite Book Awards in the US! Needless to say, this would not have been possible without your unwavering support and the many enthusiastic reviews you posted on various platforms worldwide. Therefore, I want to give a big thank you for being such wonderful readers! You make it all worthwhile.
And if that wasn’t enough, there was more … Intrigued? I’m sure you are!
Not only did The Bone Scraper Legacy win a gold medal in the International Readers’ Favorite Book Awards, Murder on the Ghan, a novella we released in 2023, also won a gold medal in a different category! ( Fiction -Short Story/Novella)
To receive two gold medals for two separate books in the SAME year has never happened to me. The judges obviously like my books! But seriously, thank you all for your wonderful support. These awards do not occur in isolation. An author’s international reputation and worldwide standing have a significant bearing on how the judges and panels assembled from around the globe view the books and decide the winner.
As you know, travel is an integral part of what I do and how I research the material for my books. I like to visit all the major destinations featured in the storylines, as accuracy and authenticity demand that.
Travel also allows me to connect with my readership and attend book launches, book clubs, and promotions in person. Not only are such events enjoyable and uplifting, but they are also inspirational and personal. Such events provide me with opportunities to have direct contact with my readership, which isn’t possible sitting up here in my attic in the Blue Mountains, where I do most of my writing.
For these reasons, I would like to share another little journey I have planned, with you now. Where are we going? I hear you ask. Well, not that far from home this time. We are going to one of my favourite destinations here in Australia: Hobart, in Tasmania.
The reason I am going to Hobart is to visit one of the most exciting, privately funded museums in the Southern Hemisphere, MONA – Museum of Old and New Art – a truly extraordinary and inspirational place. This museum has to be seen to be believed. Here, let me show you why:
The location of this museum is stunning. The best way to approach it is by ferry from the harbour. The museum itself has been carved out of a sandstone cliff on a peninsula with the exhibition halls and corridors reaching into the cliff itself.
The exhibits are original, provocative, uplifting and inspirational. In short, a perfect place to rejuvenate the creative spirit and take a little time out from the demanding tasks of research and writing.
Apart from visiting Mona, we will do other exciting things in Hobart which I’m sure you’ll find interesting: Tall Ship Sailing! And you are invited to join me on board!
I will tell you more about this trip in the next newsletter. So please make sure you open my emails. I don’t want you to miss out.
Exciting times ahead !
